I hope I never see this bullshit come to fruition more than it already has.

Occaisionally I get the thought, at risk of invoking Godwin's Law, that I wonder if any of the more liberal Germans felt this way watching the Nazi Party come to power. Not really with the whole persecution thing, since we're not there (yet), to my knowledge, but just the feeling of "Wha? You're arguing for what? How the hell do these people convince others about what they're saying?" you get when they begin to spout off bullshit and the average American wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Except we don't even have a valid foreign vengeance or economic type reason for the Evangelicals running the country, just that Americans are stupid.

It also bears noting that debaters are often judged on their ability to make the best out of a bad situation, not their ability to choose the side with the most evidence behind it.Ericxihn wrote:Probably because in competitive debate, topics are chosen so that both sides can be argued i.e. they're not debating creation v. evolution.Elaro wrote:If their debating is in any way similar to what we see on this board, how exactly can they win top awards? Asian conservative evangelical types exist. However, they don't make as much noise politically.Lagmonster wrote:You know something, I can't name any black or asian evangelical Christians off the top of my head. I'm drawing a total blank. Building upon that, as someone who's done competitve debate, you can impress a judge more by partially recovering from a devestating blow than the other side did by delivering it in the first place. Competitive debate is an abstraction of real-world debate (the kind that theoretically happens in, say, Congress) where the objective is to demonstrate the strength of your debate skills, not necessarily win the argument. They try to emphasize that by picking topics where there neither side has an overwhelming advantage or "values debates" where there's no single right answer. It's something like competitive mock trial in that sense, where they always carefully construct the cases so that the defendant isn't clearly guilty (or liable in civil cases) but he's not clearly innocent, either.Darth Wong wrote:It also bears noting that debaters are often judged on their ability to make the best out of a bad situation, not their ability to choose the side with the most evidence behind it.Ericxihn wrote:Probably because in competitive debate, topics are chosen so that both sides can be argued i.e. they're not debating creation v. evolution.Elaro wrote:If their debating is in any way similar to what we see on this board, how exactly can they win top awards? They do exist. I've been debating with Christian Fundies on a Taiwan-based board for quite a long time. It's just that the Christian population is far much smaller in Asia so encounters with fundies are rare. Like the board I go, a couple smackdowns and the fundies disappear for a long time, eventually replaced by a new moron. Usually they show up in individuals. I've yet to debate more than two people in the same time.Lagmonster wrote:You know something, I can't name any black or asian evangelical Christians off the top of my head. I'm drawing a total blank. Blasted Christians are terrified to send their kids to public school. It seems like they are afraid they aren't 'good' enough parents to make their children true idiots, err, Christians.

My favourite cringing moments were
-the female students slightly disagreeing over whether they should be walking wombs chained to the house but then meekly agreeing that women were inferior to men. One wonders what the point of letting women attend this college is if that is their fate? Legal necessity? It was fairly telling that when the group went off to Washington to lobby it was only men that went.
-when boy-wonder goes off to lobby against the evil un-Christian policy of paying compensation to workers who had got asbestosis! Sure the Bible espouses love and charity but making a company pay out to employees that are chronically ill as a result of the company's negligence - well that's just Commie talk. It kind of underlined to me the fact that the corporate whore element of the Republicans are using the ignorant fundies as their bitches. When boy-wonder is rationalising why exactly helping the needy is un-Christian and un-American you can see that he doesn't buy his argument 100%. I'm sure all free-thinking capacity will be crushed before he graduates.
I am remembering this from a few weeks back when it was on Channel 4 in the UK so I might have mis-remembered some details. I do remember the general feeling of depression at the fate of America. Oh well here's hoping that the place is closed/burned down or somefink.

Life will still be crap, but to them it'll be because "people aren't faithful enough" or "left-handed people are now against Christ" or something.

I stand well corrected on the non-white Christian fundamentalists. In truth, I didn't for a second think they didn't exist, I just realized I couldn't name any in prominence, and hadn't met any non-white fundamentalists in person, anywhere.

Boy, that kind of scary stuff suddenly makes Irans behavior logical.
If I weren't a white, male, and christian (I left the church, but hey, I was catholic so I could blame the pope if they ask me), I would run for nuclear weaponry as fast as I could, too...
And yes, that feeling is exactly the feeling the liberal germans had back in the 30's.
Maybe I'll pay that 300€ fine for trespassing into the restricted area, just for maybe being able to flip the bird at dubya.

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

Who here is surprised that the video states straight out that most of PH's students are homeschooled?
On a side note, I kind of chuckled at the name as "Patrick Henry" was the name of my Jr. High School. I wonder which actually provides better education.

You know one of the great bits about Christianity & the modern world is supposed to be "Give unto Ceasar..." which lead to church state seperation, but the quote more directly says.. Yes you need to pay your bloody taxes.Darth Servo wrote:"Estate tax and property tax should be repealed because of the Biblical principle that the Earth is the Lord's, not the State's"
On the subject of how they present the student body, well here is the image from the front page:Mat 22:17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
Mat 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Mat 22:19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
Mat 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
Mat 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
