Black Mesa Source

Post by Lazarus »

A search for the title of this thread came up with nothing, but I'm aware this project has been ongoing for some time, so if its already been mentioned under another title, my apologies. Otherwise:

http://www.blackmesasource.com/
Black Mesa: Source is the Half Life 2 total conversion of the original Half life game. Utilizing the Source engine and its endless array of possibilities and powers, Black Mesa: Source will throw you into the world that started thr Half Life continuum and introduced Gordon Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging, Ph.D Theoretical Physicist.

Black Mesa: Source was built and founded on the principle that Half Life: Source did not do the original title enough credit, regardless of the true intentions laid out with the release of Half Life: Source by Valve Software. Subsequently in November 2004, Black Mesa: Source was founded and set out to reconstruct the original title, giving it the new environments, models and abilities it deserved on the Source engine. This total conversion will not require Half Life: Source installed on your system to play, only a legitimate and working version of Half Life 2. At the present time, Valve Software is not associated or involved with the development of this project.
I think this looks truly amazing, and the sheer volume of work that must go into basically recreating an entire game is huge. I was very impressed with the HDR effects on the Source engine in EP1, so playing through the original HL with the same level of visual quality should be great. The soundtrack sounds good too.

Looks nice. A little dark though, but we can just place that under foreshadowing

Dig that beautifully modeled Garg too.

Fuck yes, I wanted so badly to play HL1: Source, but then I realised it was just the original game (not even the Blue Shift graphics update) in the Source engine. Disappointment plus.

Any idea how far along this is?

I think the 'dark' feel is great, it sort of gives the game a feeling of inevitability-you know how its all going to end. I think I'm definitely getting the soundtrack whenever that's released. though I said that about the Halo one too...

Why buy the soundtrack when you can just rip the music out of the game? Unless they do a proper performance of it or something. Some of HL1's music was pretty neat.

Hasn't this project, or one like it, been ongoing for years?

Its been going on for a year and a half, and they predict around another 18 months. The core of the work appears to be done and they even have some levels finished. They are primarily polishing, getting models for the characters, and tweaking enemy AI.

The team is even soliciting aid from experienced programers and might even be paying some people for this work.

I expect this to be one of the highest quality mods ever made.

Let's just hope they don't lose momentum and fall out before they finish it.

From the community help they are managing to solicit, I doubt it.

That said, I share your sentiment.

And unlike say, FEAR or Oblivion (which, I know, is far more expansion), the Source engine runs pretty well on hardware, that well, isn't so good.
