Post by matus1976 »

WOW.

How many polys does that thing weigh in at? 500K?

I was wondering how long it'd be until we got some serious modelers in this forum. Welcome.

Shoot, I dont remember how many polys it is, it sure is a butt load. Let me think, each major part is probably 40,000 or 50,000, and I think I load it up in about 6 or 7 parts, so I think it is around 400,000, maybe as many as 500,000.

Thanks for the positive comments all, it took me a long time do get halfway decent in lightwave, and right now I only consider myself good at *modeling* and thats about it. And modeling only mechanical things, no organic stuff.

Originally this model (and the tie fighter one) were to be made to be used in an animation I wanted to do of a Star Destroyer meeting up with the Enterprise D, in the process of researching the outcome of such a battle many o year ago, I found this here excellent site.

I have yet to model the enterprise D or find a suitably detailed model I would like to use, so no animation yet.

Though since I read wongs fan fic I keep wanting to model a 900 Km death star and animate a few star destroyers ramming it!!!!

I have also been tossing around modeling internal components based on much of what the technical discussion I have read on the web reveal about what these vessels must have to be internally consistent. Damn cool stuff, if I finished that, I planned to do a sort of 'documentary' of the construction of a star destroyer as a small web tour.

Oh well, there never is enough time is there!

Sometimes? :) AFIAK hiring independents on the basis of their work is the only recruitment method in the VFX biz.

I should also add that this model kicks Rogue Leader's ISD model's ass! It's much, MUCH more accurate.

Hey there, it has a lot of simple tiled texture maps applied, but there are a lot of specific maps I want to create and apply. The star destroyer has a whole network of surface plates at various angles and such that are pretty detailed, I want to add those in but those texture maps will be quite large, I havent yet gotten around to doing it.

Btw, I noticed your warhammer 40k ship image, I dont know much about warhammer, but I love the ships in it. That one in particular is high on my list of future modeling projects (though the Star Destroyer is still my favorite sci fi vessel!)

I posted a link to this thread over on Spacebattles and the people over there are going gaga over your mesh, too.

The SB thread is at

IMO, your work is of a quality that you could seriously consider doing 3D professionally, assuming of course that you aren't considering/doing it professionally already.

Clearly you have great skill at modeling, and I have nothing to say to the overall quality of your work (temporary generic textures ignored, of course).
However, on the issue of Star Destroyers, I have a number of gripes. Overall, I suggest that you make a careful study of Dr. Saxton's photo collection.
The aftmost angle of the neck is all wrong. Far too steep.
The main guns are out too far from the superstructure.
You have ISD1 style engine baffles on what is clearly an ISD2
The trench greeblies tend to get a little generic, they should be more accurate to the models.
The aft base of the neck doesn't connect properly with the main hull.
The round base of the sensor globes looks to be too tall.

I could try to find more, but I'd need some pretty detailed image sets.

Thanks for your comments, as I had said, its not done yet. Most of this model was done based on some blueprints I downloaded and referencing the drawings in that oversized Star Wars Cross sections book, basically free handing a lot of the nurnies and such. Any of the angles and dimensions being incorrect is from the blueprints I downloaded being incorrect. Since then I have visited the Museuem star wars exhibit twice and took about 300 pictures of the Star Destroyer that was used in Empire. I plan to completely 'overhual' the model and make it match the one used in Empire, just havent gotten around to it yet. If you nitpick, I am sure there are about 10,000 things wrong with it, I know I see tons of things. But you spend that long staring at something and your bound to find things wrong with it. That overhaul will also include modifying the model to be more 'realistic' i.e. internally consistent. I have worked out the general principle that they would work on through the various technical commentery sites on start trek, including Wong's work and the technical commentaries. Note also, the hanger bay underneath is modeled, to scale with my Tie Fighter model, though its not showing up in the pictures. I plan to model the Tie luanching racks as well, and animate a squad of tie's taking off. But right now im building a motorcycle (a real one) and working a full time and a part time job, so for now the Star Destroyer, Optimus Prime, Robotech Fighter, and Warhammer vessel are on hold =)

Fucking awesome looking.

One small point however-

The engine triple baffles give the ship away as a ISD1, i.e. the Devastator that chases the Tantive IV in A New Hope.

However, the heavy turbolaser turrets are the octuples that are only present on the ISD2, i.e. the Avenger in Empire Strikes Back.

My advice for total authenticity- either change the engines to resemble those of an ISD2, or change the turrets to resemble those of an ISD1.

The former is probably easier- though I personally would really love to see an ISD1 turrets in detail. If you haven't seen them, you'll find them at the Devastator exhibition page on SWTC.

I think I will be leaving the baffles in after redoing the whole model, regardless of what version it turns out to be, because to me they are a type of thrust vectoring vane, not merely physically one, but some type of force field projecting plate that will deflect the thrust to allow for greater sublight maneuverability.

good point. I have been away from working on this for a while but the original gun turrets are going to be the first thing to go when I work on this model some more, they are just out of scale and dont fit properly. Plus the rear pair should be ion cannons.

For an excellent essay on the Imperator class, including angles and dimensions see:

btw, are you modelling it after the Devastator (all hail the ISD I subclass)
or the Avenger (ISD II subclass)?

But this is The Imperator Class Star Destroyer!
It is already perfect! (well you know probably better it's your model.)
