Red Storm Rising
(for those that don't know, RSR is an old DOS-based submarine game)
First: It is a sweet victory indeed when, after no less than six Tomahawk missiles and four Mk48 torpedos, you finally sink that goddamn Soviet aircraft carrier.
Second: It's a real bitch when, after having just expended all of your ordnance, CINCSUBLANT expects you to race to home port, restock, and then race back out to sea only to soon receive word that your next target has already slipped away and the damn Soviets have gained the upper hand in the North Sea.
That said, anyone else played this game? I still rather enjoy playing it now and again... to the point that I'm playing as an old Permit class sub in 1992 on the second-hardest difficulty. I'd probably do better if I still had my manual... I've managed to puzzle most things out fine, although I'm still not sure whether, for example, it's more advantageous to be in the same thermal zone as your target, or a different one.

I like Strike Fleet myself. Got it loaded on the my desktop, hadn't played in years, not since i got rid of the Commodore in 1992 or so, tried one of the missions i always had trouble on, and something clicked and I had a perfect game. Sunk all the escorts of the Commies guarding a troop convoy, closed with the transports and sunk them all with gunfire.

I need to find a copy of Jane's Fleet Command, which I've never played. It's too bad Harpoon 4 was cancelled.

I've got it (wheee!) still love it. Been toying with Dangerous Waters and been disappointed. It adds a lot of depth when you are using the ships that are modelled, but it won't let you use any others.Vympel wrote:I need to find a copy of Jane's Fleet Command, which I've never played. I used to love controlling a huge taskforce, not just a single frigate.

The thing about Dangerous Waters is that you can get a few guys on the same platform, and that's where the fun starts.
Two guys in a OHP vs two guys in an Akula makes for a great head to head encounter. Two guys in a P-3 trying to stop one guy in a Kilo from shooting up a convoy is even more fun.

I know there is a method, but all I see is the madness.

Dont mention that fucking Soviet carrier. I spent an entire day playing the game on my C-64 and finally had the carrier in my sights. I was about to set up an attack run when my mother walked into my room not paying attention to where she was going (this is common occurance with my mom) and pulled the power pack out of the wall with her foot.
I screamed with horror and she didn't even understand what she had done. I lost a whole day's gaming. It sucked.
As for the game, yeah it was fun. The C-64 was good game platform. I have fond memories.
Lately, I've dusted out my copy of Uncommon Valor from Matrix Games and have been playing the Coral Sea scenario. So far out of 6 games I've lost twice, won twice, and fought to a draw twice. In every game one or both of my carriers were hit or sunk.

The PC version has the distinct advantage of "Accelerated Time" mode, which doubled the game speed... excellent for when you're stalking a carrier group that's moving away from you.
On another note, the game definitely rewards you for using the older boats. I got roughly double the "Efficiency Rating" when I played through the campaign using a Permit class boat than I did with the Seawolf... even though with Seawolf I had it on "Ultimate" difficulty and accomplished every mission perfectly, ending the war in eleven days (compared to 'Serious' difficulty and over thirty days with the Permit).
Still haven't gotten the Medal of Honor though. Wondering what it takes to get one of those... maybe a Sturgeon class in '96?

I remember the C-64 version having time acceleration. I don't remember anything about medals, I literally have not played since probably 1989 or 90. Microprose was a great company. Picked up Airborne Ranger in 1990 at a Warehouse music store for really cheap cause they were selling off all the C-64 games.

Anti-ship msisiles become so aggravating on the harder difficulties... they usually don't kill the dangerous ships in one hit, that's assuming you manage to hit one and not have it shoot down the missile, you can't shoot them past those ships at the transports because they'll get shot down in the middle by the damn escorts, they instantly give away your position once you've fired them, and carriers suck up a ludicrous number of missiles... that carrier I mentioned in the OP sucked down fully half my Permit-class sub's total ordnance. By the end of that campaign I had completely abandoned missiles and was just shooting Mk48 torpedoes at everything.
