Doing the Mexican hat dance at the school end-of-year celebration with his classmates. He's paired up with Hannah, who's wearing orange.

Still dancin' ...

A different kind of dance. He had a game which started at exactly the same time that the end-of-year school party ended, so we bundled him in the car and drove straight from the school to the soccer pitch.

And this is him being ... well, himself. Can you tell that we forgot the camera for this birthday party and had to use one of those crappy disposable cameras? I did my best to compensate for the bad lighting with a GIMP backlight correction script, but it's still pretty ugly, and that's the best shot from the entire roll. Most of the shots had more grain than picture. Argh.

Nice pictures of what must be a great kid...except for the last one. That indeed is pretty horrible. The depth and perspective from the lens is terrtible: the kid on the right looks like a cardboard cutout.

Oh yeah, I already get a bit wistful knowing that my baby is gone and there's a rambunctious boy in his place. And soon that rambunctious little boy will be gone too, replaced by a "pre-teen". Anyway, my boys still "sort of" get along. They're not bitter enemies, anyway. They play together, and fight together.

There really are some parts of a kid's personality that are there from birth. People who dismiss the effects of genetics on personality have obviously never had kids.

That's what I get for forgetting the camera at home and having to resort to one of those goddamned disposables. I'm just glad I had my good camera on the day of the school event and soccer game. All of those shots are high-motion shots, with kids dancing and jumping and running. Worse yet, the shots at the school were in the shade and the sky had clouded over by the time we got to the soccer pitch, so the lighting was poor. With the cheap disposable, I would have gotten nothing but blur and grain.

I was just looking at the combination of Asian and Western features in David's face, and it struck me: Damn, that's one handsome kid! The lucky bugger will have to beat the women off with a stick once he's older. (Or maybe he already has to.)

Did you pixelate the football jersies for a reason?

Yes. There was a very specific local business name on the front which would make it really easy to figure out where I live. While I understand that a determined sleuth could eventually figure it out despite me not using my home address for my domain name registration, I don't see any reason to make it so damned easy that you can figure out where I live from the Yellow Pages.

We tied 3-3. And David is 8, so the only positions they recognize are "offense", "defense", and "goalkeeper". And the kids barely seem to recognize any distinction between offense and defense; every kid on the field except for the goalkeeper generally joins a rush. We're trying to explain positional play to them but only a handful of them do it. But this is the year when they typically learn how to play positions; Matthew's team was fairly consistent with it by the end of the season when he was 8, and they won the playoff tournament that year.

Indeed, same-race pairing is a low-level form of inbreeding when you think about it. That's why I sometimes refer to it as "racial inbreeding", especially when dealing with idiots who think that interracial matings are bad.

I'm more amazed he's 8...wow, time does fly. I really am dumbfounded by friends who have kids of 2-3, but to have someone within less then a decade of me to having two sons and the youngest being 8? Really congrats, your boy is growing .

Mike, that really is one beautiful kid, and it's absolutely wonderful for us to see both of your boys grow over the years (where we can watch but be safely beyond babysitting distance ). Has he mentioned any girls in particular yet, or is that still a bit into the future?

I'm thinking of the phenomenon of "hybrid vigor" in non-human species. Of course, I suspect that humans of all races, despite their superficial differences, are actually far too similar for such a result.
