Novel to tell the story of the first "new" Sith

The Sith were in shambles. In-fighting among their ranks allowed the Jedi to thwart their dark plans. One last battle to end an era resulted in the extinction of the Sith. Or so it was believed -- one Dark Lord survived.

From the ashes emerged Darth Bane, the lone Sith who was able to foresee the inevitable doom of the misguided order, and learn from this costly lesson. He forged a new order of secretive Sith, plotting from the shadows, carefully rebuilding power a generation at a time for centuries until the revenge of the Sith could finally be achieved.

Who was this Dark Lord? What events forged the man who would split from the Sith ranks and entirely redefine the order?

Readers will find out in the forthcoming hardcover novel, Star Wars: Path of Destruction, A Novel of the Old Republic. Set over a thousand years before the events of A New Hope, and just prior to the events of the Jedi vs. Sith comics series, this novel by author Drew Karpyshyn is scheduled for release in October of 2006 from Del Rey Books. The release dates in the two sources conflict, with the Amason one specifying September 26, while the SW.com giving an unspecified date in October.

I think this can be very good, for two reasons. There are no established characters to mess up, and the continuity issue should not be a thorn. Second, it's a new author, who doesn't have his or her own SW creations (the way Zahn, Anderson, and Stackpole do) to push forward whether or not that is warranted. And the concept itself is quite intriguing.

I am looking forward to this, especially finding out more about the Old Republic.

Anyone read anything by this Drew Karpyshyn? What's he like?

He wrote most of the stuff in KOTOR 1 and 2, or so I've heard.

That's certainly a good sign. Will this novel deal with the events prior and leading up to the near-extinction of the Sith? Because I can't imagine Darth Bane doing too much more than finding an apprentice after he goes into hiding.

See, this is interesting. I might look into this. It's way the hell better than pushing Han and Luke out of their rocking chairs to fight yet another uber menace. Or worse yet, subjecting us to their insufferable offspring.

There was a comic book miniseries called 'Jedi Vs Sith' that featured the end of the Sith order which Darth Bane was the only survivor of. It also had him meeting a young girl and taking her as an apprentice.

Thats great, I've recently been playing through KOTOR 2 lately, and dawned on the opinion that KOTOR1&2 are probably the best stories spawned from the original movies.

That is, if KOTOR2 had been finished... It was like a good novel with a dozen chapters torn out for no reason.

According to tthis source he has worked on KOTOR 1 but not 2.

Well, it's still good news, nonetheless. KOTOR 2 may have had it's moments, and is still better than a great deal of the EU, and was somewhat lessened in quality by the market-forced abbreviation of it's ending, but the original still has a superior story, IMO.

Well, if the man worked on KOTOR 1's story line, along with NWN and Baldur's Gate 2, I'd say this is a pretty good investment, because someone who's actually at least competent is a helluva lot better choice than say... Kevin J. Anderson, or KT Jelly.
