Here is a Discover article on abiogenesis, focusing on the RNA world. I hope it helps.

I wouldn't try to debate this person again, he will just continue to quote things that cast doubt on our current understanding of abiogenesis, not acknowledging the main point (which you have already pointed out) that this ignorance does not automatically lead to the existence of a creator. It's perfectly all right to leave this debate to more informed individuals and hope that someone can reach him.

Slightly OT, but you watch —if the scientists actually succeed in creating a very primitive life form in the lab from chemical building blocks, the Creatinists will either froth at the mouth about the boffins daring to "play God" or will furiously handwave away the result as meaningless or fake. I expect their little heads will explode...

Seriously, the likelier result is that they will cite the lab experiment as "proof" that only an Intelligent Designer could have made life on Earth since it took "intelligent designers" to do it in the lab.

Pity though. I'd like to see their heads explode, personally.

Oil an emergency?! It's about time, Brigadier, that the leaders of this planet of yours realised that to remain dependent upon a mineral slime simply doesn't make sense.

On the contrary, they'll just scream even louder "the experiment clearly required intelligence to carry out, thus proving an intelligent designer was needed in the original one.
