A poll: Konami vs Capcom vs Tecmo
I have recently been involved in a pretty good debate.
Whom in your opinion is the best developer of the last 20 years.
Konami: Castlevania, Salamander, Contra. etc.
Capcom: Street Fighter, Mega Man, 1942,43, etc
Tecmo: Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Super Bowl, Star Force, etc
I know tecmo doesn't have as many releases, but damn, what they have is fucking outstanding.
Please vote and give us some comments.

Has Tecmo even done anything notable within the last ten years, other than the Dead or Alive and Monster Rancher series?

Never heard of Deception.
Frankly in terms of relative overall output, I've give it to either Capcom or Konami, but beyond that, I frankly can't decide.
EDIT: Aw fuck, just give it to Capcom and award Konami an honourable mention.

Since E3 I've realized what a machine Nintendo is when it comes to pumping out games. They're working on like a dozen Wii titles (a half dozen or so for launch and a bunch for later on, not counting the unannounced games), a good two dozen or more DS titles, and several AAA GameCube titles (Zelda, Kirby's Adventure, and Super Paper Mario), while at the same time assisting Ubisoft and several other companies in the development of Wii titles, developing the console itself, and developing new virtual console titles. It's ridiculous. And somehow they keep it from being a spew of crap like other big companies do sometimes (eyes EA).

Have you ever been to a fucking arcade?! Street Fighter? Marvel vs. Capcom? Sheesh. At least acknowledge some of the all-time arcade classics, man.Bounty wrote:Have any of these companies made a game I care about ?
No.
Naturally, many days spent at an arcade perfecting my goddamn Hadokens will tell you that Capcom is my pick. Contra and Castlevania both whoop ass, so lotsa love to them too. And somewhere buried under a pile of broken jewel cases I have Tecmo's Deception. Dumb game, really, but my pals and I used to have all kinds of fun with it.

This is by no means any easy decision. I love Konami for their Metal Gear series, and Castlevania series. But I also love Capcom for Megaman, Resident Evil, etc. This is simply not a fair choice.

Sounds like someone who completely doesn't undertand fighting games. Going into a "dial-a-combo" is a great way to get parried and your face beat in.Bounty wrote:I know about SF and other Simon Says button-combo-whoring..."fighting" games. I refer you to the Daigo versus Justin Wong CvS2 final, where Daigo was at a sliver of life. Chip damage would kill him. He knew it, JWong knew it, the audience knew it. So what happens? JWong throws Chun-Li's super, only to get all 14 hits parried and gets destroyed.
"Dial-a-combo" works great against your neighborhood 14 year olds, but it rapidly diminishes in effect the better you get.
Konami takes the top spot for me by a wide margin. Castlevania, TMNT, MGS, Gradius, and Contra, not to mention Gensou Suikoden, Silent Hill, and Zone of the Enders. They started good and continued to stay good throughout their run, with only a few hiccups (Castlevania 64 and the original ZOE, anyone?).
Capcom would come in second on this list primarily due to Megaman X and Breath of Fire. Though there have been outstanding Street Fighter and Resident Evil/Biohazard games, these aren't as consistently good.
For me, the Ninja Gaiden games are the only recent thing that Tecmo's made recently that I've been interested in (I simply could not get into DoA at all). They really can't take a top slot for me as a modern developer on account of a single series, despite a large stock of older games that I'd liked.

Silent Hill was the only survival horror game to really scare the shit out of me. Resident Evil and Dino Crisis were simply too campy to take seriously. Oh yes, there were "startling" moments, but those simply amounted to "boo raptor/zombie dog, lol" and failed to be downright soul-smotheringly disturbing like SH.
