Titan Quest.

Post by weemadando »

After playing the demo, and being on a day off work I decided to go and buy this and lose myself in some Diablo-esque mindlessness.

Its a wonderful, polished game. Its pretty, its fun but unfortunately not without its niggles (my inventory is HOW FUCKING SMALL). Anyhow. Well worth playing the demo for. If more people get into it, perhaps we should look at making a few SDnet custom lands etc for some online whupping.

I'm getting an "Age of Mythology" vibe off of this game.

I can't tell is this game entirely online or is the story single player with multiplayer custom worlds?

Its 40+ hours of singleplayer hack'n'slashing. There is the online option that the Diablo games have had (yet to see how well implemented), and the ability to create from scratch with a really simple editor (from what I've seen of it).

Its a lot of fun, if a little simplistic. But hey...

I might purchase this game.. The thing i liked about guild wars was that you didn't have to play with other people.

I'm not a fan of MMORPG's Titan quest = new Diablo?

It is basically Diablo II ++. It has good graphics, a very simple, very intuitive interface, and is exceedingly addictively fun.

It has some online server issues right now, that will probably be fixed by the 5th, and has a problem with very small inventories, and the need to have a buddy who also plays to mule for you.

The nice thing is that it allows your single player character to play online and vice versa, thus you don't get stuck unable to play if the internet/servers are down, or simply don't want to deal with people for a while. All in all, it is very fun.

I just barely finished the Greece section of the game. Exploring the ancient world is pretty cool. I thought the game took some time to find its stride, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit now. I'm hoping that we'll be seeing a number of high-quality custom lands before too long. This game really has the potential for a lot of replay value.

Has anyone found any epic or legendary items yet? The only one I've found is the epic amulet Frostmoon.

Spoiler: Your inventory gets larger as the game progresses, but I still found myself leaving behind a fair amount of treasure that I couldn't carry, especially when the enemies were coming out of the woodwork.

Yeah, the extra inventory made the game for me, though having 3 (count'em) different "view item" filters for the post battle scavenging makes life a lot easier.

And I have 2 epic weapons. They fucking rock (good thing I went the dual wield warrior earlier on).

I think we should definately all look at getting together one weekend for an online bash.

Addendum - the streamlining of savepoints/portals/teleporters has made me happy. No longer do I have to book a 4 hours marathon to do a section, having the fountains of rebirth at REALLY regular intervals makes gameplay a breeze when you only have half-hour blocks to play with.

I'm thinking about getting this. Am I correct in assuming the content is largely Pre-Roman Ancient World? Classical Greece, Egypt, etc?

EDIT: What's the character creation like? Diablo clones, or something at least as marginally diverse as Dungeon Siege II?

Character creation is as follows.

1) Pick male or female.
2) Pick a name and tunic colour (one of these can be changed later, the other can't).

Character creation is done. No visual customisation (disappointing, but hey).

Once in game, when you get your first level you are presented with a series of options as to what "style" you will follow - warrior, defender, hunter, rogue, spirit, nature, earth, storm (I think that's the name of the eight). Think of these as classes each with their own skill tree.

Now, the skill trees work a little differently than most. Instead of having your current level unlock new abilities, you are given 3pts per level, which can be used to buy new levels (and unlock certain abilities at those levels), or to buy the abilities themselves. Most abilities have a cap on them of 6 or 8 levels so that you can't just over-max a character (think the werewolf druid in D2, or the zeal-lock paladin). But it opens up some options, do you leave yourself weak for a while at the start and rush to the high level powers (theoretically by level 11 you can have unlocked the top ranks of them - lvl32 powers), or do you build a solid base and move on slowly? At lvl8 you are provided with the option of buying into another style, so you can pick up a variety of abilities, or continue to focus.

There are only 3 stats (Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity) and you get 2 points per level to add to them (and many of the abilities you purchase add points to them anyway). Items, naturally, can have some pretty harsh prerequisites, but if you reach lvl10 and you can't have at least +30/40 to your primary stat from item buffs, then there is something wrong with you.

That's about it for character creation.

Oh, and in relation to setting, apparently we go through the following:

Classical Greece.
Egypt.
China/Asia.

And apparently there is a Mount Olympus section.

Oh - and one last thing, the rag doll physics in it are fucking fun.

I love knocking a skeleton back three screens with a super-critical, or blasting a catgirl off a cliff.

Another thing that has really appealed to me is that the items people are carrying, they drop. So if you see an enemy wearing a sweet, glowing suit of armour and carrying a mace crackling with electricity, then if you kill him, he WILL drop it and you CAN pick it up. And it also eliminates things like the tiny little mayfly dropping a rare suit of fullplate.

Cool, thanks. I suppose I can live without customizing appearance, especially if loot drops are WYSIWYG (about friggin' time).

In weemadando's spirit, here are the stats for Frostmoon, an epic necklace:

31% slowed movement retaliation for 3.0 seconds
+26% cold damage
6-14 cold damage
+36 energy

required level: 10

Not bad, and I have yet to find anything that comes close. I also found a rare weapon called Deathweaver's Legtip that served me pretty well for awhile but I have since sold it. I thought the character creation/progression was a bit odd at first, but I've come to adore the level of customization it offers.

And another thing: as far as I can tell, the game doesn't have wacky level-scaling a la Oblivion: enemies get tougher as the game progresses, and not as you get stronger. My favorite rag-doll moment was when I knocked a satyr up into a tree.

Yeah, the Deathweaver Legtip served me grandly too (had it paired with Heartpierce) until I found Patrolocus' Blade. The only problem I'm encountering is that I'm a hoarder (I have a large selection of the pieces of godlike and monster abilities - some complete, but I'm unwilling to put them in anything, in case I find something better).

Picked the game up today on you guys recommendation. Not a bad Diablo clone(unlike that disappointment Lineage or what not). Currently using a Spirit character, using mainly the Staff line of spells(triple cast one) with a Staff that has a base 8-24 lit damage plus 2-14 from two pieces of Zeus' relic. Unfortunately none of the Epics I've encountered have been worth keeping for my character.
