Best EU ship designs

Post by Galvatron »

As much as I may loathe the EU in general, every now and then they strike gold. For example, I've always liked the TIE Phantom from Rebel Assault II...

Looking back, I'd have preferred it to the Eta-2 as a transitional design in the prequels rather than an OT-era stealth fighter.

Anyone else?

Cam Kennedy really struck gold with this, even though it's only seen in one frame:

And of course, Jerec's Vengeance - the slim, black SSD from Dark Forces II.

I rather like the Dauntless cruiser from Rebellion, myself.

I wish it had more surface texture. The entire dorsal section seems rather featureless.

I've always liked the E-wing and TIE/d.

The cloakshape fighter also has a neat design.

Say what you will of their design, but I've always liked the Old Republic hammerhead frigates from the KOTOR series. They actually look pretty good in action.

Almost forgot, I've become somewhat intrigued by the Bulwark-class battlecruisers. They look like giant exotic fish, but also look really massive. Like they can plow through lesser ships.

The YT2000.

The Vengeance would be great with a texture update.

And of course, the Tie Avenger. A proper heavy fighter for the Empire, and not rediculous like the Defender (Which isn't even a proper Empire-flavored name)

Aw, already got my main choice! I always thought those looked really nice. But baring those, I've always had a soft spot in my heart For Victory-SD's and Old Dreadnaughts.

YT-2000, a freighter fun to fly. I also liked the K-wing from the Black Fleet Crisis books, because the B-wing looks too twiggy to be an effective bomber.

Is the YT-2000 even a freighter? The cockpit essentially blocks the cargo mandibles and it's listed as a "transport" in the game.

And that affects access to it's cargo bays (limited as they may be) how, exactly?
It certainly won't work as a tug/lighter pushing huge loads of bulk cargo around but what's stopping it from transporting small volume high value stuff?
I've never seen the MF move much in the way of bulk cargo and yet both Lando/Vuffi and Han/Chewie made do (kinda).

I like the idea of a pocket star destroyer like the Nebula class, but if only they enlarged her a little to store more supplies aboard.

Aside from that, I wished to see some of the KOTOR designs too, especially the Ravager.

Of fighters, E-wings, XJ and TIE Advanced and Defenders are nice

Oh Christ, no. Bob Brown correctly noted the utilitarian nature of the "jaw" for cargo loading/unloading in the original Falcon, and the YT-2400, being a small courier vessel rather than the Falcon's light stock freighter, did not need them. Its not just an aesthetic feature, but the YT-2000 shits on that.

Isn't the YT-2000 about the size of the 2400?

I'm still not seeing the problem then. The cargo winches in the mandables could easily be for lifting the cargo into the tube-like structure and moved into the central portion of the ship. I don't see how it shits on anything.

Considering how heavy the Otana's firepower is (in-game, which is all we have), it seems to be to be a thinly disguised military-grade assault shuttle. Presumably CEC made a killing selling the "freighter" to mercenaries, pirates, and those who wished to have a heavy but less-than-obvious defense for internal cargo. It doesn't employ mandibles, but it's big enough to hold a bunch of troops and several missions performed with it involve suppressing llocal resistance and docking with a hostile target.

I don't see the problem wih a ship to fill that niche. Its capacity falls inbetween the -1300 and the -2400, that's all. And IMO its just as attractive as the -2400, if not more so.

The Tie Advanced. It really looks like an evoloution of the Interceptor, the production varient of Vaders X1. It looks sleak, fast and absoloutly leathal.

And it is all of the above.

I also liked the K-Wing, sorta like a distant relative to the ARC bomber from ROTS and perhaps the only good thing to come from the BFC, even if we never see it again.

Capital ships wise, I have a thing for the Dreadnaught. Also the Interdictor Cruiser, specificaly the Enforcer class varient which drops the gravtiy wells for being an all warship design, a great miniture ISD sorta thing.

And I have to chear on the Tie Phantom, a great looking TIE varient, I always envisoned it (minus the cloaking technology) as a long range scouting craft / light interceptor.

The whole lot of you wrote:::Snip banter on the 2000::
Doesn't some fluff material and the like point to it as being marketted more like a space RV than a dedicated cargo hauler?

But anyway, that's my choice, none of this dicking around with an offset cockpit, no compensator mobile WMDs, nothing. The Marauder is sort of nice, though, and the Phantom is nice and slick.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.
