Active Cloaking tech, for real?
http://www.star.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/project ... xv/oc.html
Supposedly, they've developed some nifty active cloaking technology here. I'm skeptical of the demonstration videos, since I know a similar effect can easily be created with a blue/green screen, but it seems to be on the level.
If this isn't a hoax, it's a pretty damn cool first step. It looks like it's only viable under controlled conditions and given one observer from a fixed location.
If it is a hoax, what am I missing that gives it away?

Do not meddle in the affairs of insomniacs, for they are cranky and can do things to you while you sleep.

If you look at the movies they provide, it shows the effect better. The second movie seems to be the best example.neoolong wrote:The camo from the first pic doesn't seem to work very well. If that is the way it is supposed to work it probably would only work when it's really dark.
Ghost in the Shell uses some sort of camo based on that concept, I think. Kind of like how when scientists try to bring public attention to something they draw attention by referencing Star Trek so that people sort of already know what they're talking about.I don't know if it is fake or not, but I wonder why they reference Ghost in the Shell.

Yeah, but I didn't see where it was referenced.Ghost in the Shell uses some sort of camo based on that concept, I think. Worth checking out, and only slightly more than a meg. Worth downloading, I think.neoolong wrote:Haven't seen it yet.
Couldn't tell you. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, and it was probably covered more in the manga. Kind of like how you don't really need a reference for transporters or replicators in Star Trek, since they're usually in just about every episode.Yeah, but I didn't see where it was referenced.

Yeah, it does. So I guess this means that spandex-like UFP uniforms would work best then.neoolong wrote:Yeah, it looks better in the second video. It works better with flat surfaces, or spheres. Not the curves like the raincoat.
Assuming that they're able to get an omnidirectional version of this thing down, the raincoat shouldn't be too much of a problem, though a smoother surface would be ideal.
Imagine a sneaksuit with that tech though...how cool would that be?

GITS Refrence is becuase Major Kusanagi uses therm-optic camoflauge throughout both. However, hers is probably much more effective than this.neoolong wrote:The camo from the first pic doesn't seem to work very well. Addenum: I must say, the rain-coat was neat. While all of that is easily doable on a bluescreen, it was quite good. PErsonally, I would have prefered him to move some stuff over the background to show that it wasn't just a bluescreen, but whatever.
I know that reference. I just didn't find where it was referenced on the page. Beyond just a similarity in cloaks.Singuler Quartet wrote:GITS Refrence is becuase Major Kusanagi uses therm-optic camoflauge throughout both. I hope you all have realised that the "cloak" is merely the use of a project to reflect the image behind the person off of a special material by bouncing it off a mirror between the viewer and the object thats "cloaked". This means you need to have a completely pre-planned situation with a controllable "stage" on which to use the technology. There will be no cloaking on ships or people, not unless you plan on walking around with a glass pane in front of you all the time.
The best application of this technology is likely to be in magic shows. I imagine copperfield and blaine would love this shit. But there wont be any invisible soldiers or airplanes for quite some time.

Sì! Abbiamo un' anima! Ma è fatta di tanti piccoli robot.
But it can impress chicks. Hook up with omnidirectional camera. Of course this is only camo, not cloaking. You would also have to wear a helmet, and have several cameras and computers. Not really worth the effort for camo.

Anything worth the cost of a missile, which can be located on the battlefield, will be shot at with missiles. If the US military is involved, then things, which are not worth the cost if a missile will also be shot at with missiles. -Sea Skimmer

The current concept of the 2025 Land Warrior project for the US military would have a camoflage blending system built into it according to the current design they are working on. While it could get dropped, it is unlikely as they have a way of achieving the effect as it is.
Then it goes on about CBR protection, and nanocarbon tubes and what not.The Future warrior's uniform may be black to start with, but it wouldn't have to stay that way. A new method of weaving promises to yield uniforms that can change color, chameleon-style, to provide camouflage in any environment. In this method, electrically charged polymer drops produce a dense web of form fitting fibers. By adding electrophoretic inks to the mix, the Army could create a uniform that would change color in response to different types of light, making the soldier practically invisable in any situation.
