Can Star Trek stand up to LotR?

Post by C.S.Strowbridge »

In a word, no.

Rotten Tomatoes currently has 58 reviews, and only one is negative.

And you have to think they're going after the same audience, so a weekend to weekend lose of more than 60% would not be unexpected. Just to note, a drop off of 30-40% is good in this day of pump and dump movie marketing. More than 50% is a sign that the movie has no legs and will probably have a first weekend multiplier of less than 3.

Of course it can't stand up to LotR, which will utterly annihilate its market. I have absolutely no idea why they would wait to release a movie to give it only a week before being crushed in the box office by such a huge release. My only speculation is that it was a deliberate ploy to try to create excuses for them when the movie flopped.

This is not exactly news. Who expected STN to withstand TTT? The only question was the sheer magnitude of the beatdown, and it looks huge.

The only way Trek is going to stand up against TTT is if someone nails Trek to a wall.

Nemesis will be slaughtered by The Two Towers.

And they shall drink the blood spilt from its throat.

Fellowship grossed about 850 million. Towers is said to be better. End result is a disintegrated Nemesis.

TTT will probably gross in its first one and a half weeks what Nemesis cost to make...

This is going to be fun.

Nemesis is going to be a dust fart in a hurricane next to TTT, I really think English lacks an adjective powerful enough to describe the beatdown level were talking here......

Nemesis will stand up to The Two Towers in the same way unarmed Ferengi could stand up to fully armed Uruk-hai.

I simply put it like this:

The theatre, which was playing not just STN, but Harry Potter, Die Another Day, Treasure Planet, and a number of other flicks, was almost empty last night.

The 5 o'clock showing of that same theatre's TTT was sold out yesterday. Nemesis is going to be a bloody skid mark on the artillery wheels.

Nemesis has the same chance of staying alive against TTT that a ST shuttlecraft has going up against a SSD. It has the same life expectancy as a feddie redshirt being hunted down by Boba Fett. Nemesis is so toast that it's not even funny.

I think TTT could beat the first film B.O. But reviews mean very little, cause Harry Potter 2 got better reviews, but it's B.O. is well below the first. Same with AotC, for that matter. Like I said earlier, only James Bond has been able to beat the odds this season. But I'd have to say, TTT has the best chance of making it as well.

It all depends on repeat-viewers. Modern film box-office grosses are heavily dependent on teenagers seeing a movie 10 times. This is something that James Cameron demonstrated quite clearly to the world with Titanic; make a mediocre movie that teenagers will see 30 times apiece for whatever reason (dating, in the case of Titanic), and you will make zillions of dollars. Make a great movie that people only see once (eg- "The Usual Suspects"), and you will make modest money. And all points in between.

Will nemesis withstand TTT? No chance in hell.
My local Regal Cinema is not even playing Nemesis anymore, they took it out. Needed to make room for LOTR. I was surprised they took it out so early. It must really be bombing to be gone after a couple days considering how many other movies are playing there.

But in the age of DVD and large flat screen tvs, how likely is someone to watch a movie in the theater THAT many times?

Never underestimate the power of the lifeless teeny-bopper!! Ever wonder what happens when those kiddies have way too much time and money to burn? Wonder no more, they'll watch the movie over and over and over until they know every single line. It's sick I tell you, sick!

Utsanomiko and I only went to see FORT in the cinema once, but when the Extended DVD came out, I've seen it nearly five times.

Nemesis isn't even in any theaters here in Norway and The Two Towers is on every one of I know of some playing around the clock. also a lot of pepole are going to watch it at least twice. I am, and several of my friends are, and they're not rabid fans either. Star Trek yeah right :!: :!: :!:

I went to see TTT today, on a day when High School was in session, in a theatre that no one knows about, at a time (1:00 PM) when no one goes to see movies.

The theatre was jam-packed.

And the movie does indeed rule, if you didn't already know that.

Unless you have seen this movie at least three times, you have no plausible excuse to go see Nemesis.

It stands a snowball's chance in the Sahara.

Overall I can only imagine the reason for Nemesis close release was to recieve backwash from TTT...other than that should've been released sometime in Febuary or something.

Ick, bad mental image.
