Commander Peter '979' Mitchell was a Lieutenant on board the HMS Norfolk during WWIII. While assigned on a still classified mission to prevent a Russian sub from extracting a high-level DOD defector, the ship suffered severe damage and lost almost all it's officers. Despite this, Mitchell took control as the ranking officer and completed his mission before leading the battered ship out of enemy waters and back to friendly territory.

I would like to echo the admiral's sentiments. These refits should be completed as soon as possible. I just returned from New York. The situation is... unstable. More on that later. The equipment installations have been completed, but we're having some difficulty debugging the software. It could be a while before Arcadia's communications bay is fully operational.

Ah yes... I don't wish to hold up the group here, so:
Modifications to be made to the Silence include the addition of an ASDS (Advanced SEAL Delivery System) with a capacity for 16 SEALs (or anyone else interested in its use); updated electronics and sensors, specifically those geared to hunting and killing other submarines; any stealth packages that can be added to decrease other submarines abilities to detect my boat.
So it is official! Those last two are somewhat vague, so any further specification that you can add is welcome. With this, the Silence will be ready for deployment.

Well, give me suggestions! Should I scrap that damn small Spruance hull and get something nicer, or save it for after the first deployment?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

[To be perfectly honest, if you are scrapping the hull and most of the systems, it's not really a Tico anymore. It's like a baby Kirov, or something. My post about the Iowa was only half in jest... if you are going to be modifying it so radically that the only similarity is a couple weapons systems, then it's not eactly the same class, now is it? You are making the Irascible class, presently.Surlethe wrote:Well, give me suggestions! In short, I am going to have to say no to an entirely new hull, entirely new propulsion system, entirely new command and control system, and mostly new weapons systems. You need to choose another class for that many radical changes, the same as atg had to.]

Arcadia's communications bay is up and running, Comrade Admiral. Unfortunately, there's already a backlog of communiques. The first transmission is from The Boss. It wasn't encrypted, but I have no reason to doubt its authenticity. It contains no sensitive information. I'm putting it through now.
The next one is from the UN Secretary-General. Encryption code confirmed.

I trust you have the good of the world in mind. Farewell.
That's all for now, sir. Judging from my experiences in New York yesterday, I can safely say it might be a few days before you're issued any official orders. "C'mon, come on!" Lt. Cmdr. "Lonestar" Bucher snarled, pulling the A-6 out of the path of a SAM. The fucking queers and weasels were suppose to have suppressed all the defenses in this sector. Was his squadron the only in Western Europe doing it's fucking job?
"You need to learn to relax Lonestar, you're heading straight for an ulcer." His flight officer, Lt. Sean "Preacher" Fitzpatrick said. "Coming up on the target now, just try to be straight and level for 15 seconds please." There was a rattle of heavy machine gun fire raking the Intruder. Another missile rocketed by, and it occured to Lonestar that they were probably taking MANPADS at this point.
The war thus far had been a disaster for the USN. The Nimitz was in the shop, maybe for the rest of the war, and the air wing was all over Europe in bits and pieces. His squadron was flying out of Northern France, which had the benefit of being away from the front, but the con of one motherfucker of a flight to the front, wiht the fun of Migs, Sukhois, and assorted SAMs all the way out.
"Over the target" Preacher said. "Release" The cluster bombs fell on the airstrip the Reds were flying Hinds out of, and Lonestar was gratified to see at least one go up completely as he screamed over.
"Alright, let's get out of here." Lonestar said, turning. More Machine gun fire raked him, and he winced, thinking of the shit Chief Tysroc was going to give him when he got back.
"We're good" Preacher said "So is Bookworm and Mumbles" refering to the other Intruder tasked for the raid. They flew on for about 20 minutes, the potshots diminishing, finally stopping as they crossed into Belgian airspace. Preacher leaned back and exhaled. "God was with us today."
"Hmmm. Think he was with the poor S.O.B.'s we just blew to Hell?"
Preacher shrugged. "I don't know. I had thought....I don't know."
The flew on in silence for a bit more, than came in for a landing at the air base. As they Taxied up Chief Tysroc gave him several looks of death because of the condition of the plane, and the two air crewsheaded off for the debrief (which didn't take too long. Small favors that the operations head was too busy these days)
They headed over to the club, and sat down at their normal place. Lonestar looked around, and the bartender shook his head.
"You missed her mate, she came by an hour ago to see if you were around. Already flying back to the States."
"Aw, Damn it." Lonestar said. Who knew if he'd ever see that mouthy F-15 pilot again? She wasn't bad, for an Air Force puke. Even if she was just two shy of Acehood.

The Premier's message was amusing, but the other two were quite predictable... quite entirely because of the arguments I presented at the UN and before half a dozen other major governments. Peace? Peace, like love, is a word rarely used appropriately... and as such, just as rarely conveys the true import of such a word.
Peace is beyond the scope of Arcadia, beyond this task force, GDI, or even the whole goddamned United Nations. Some people are simply hateful little bastards, and as long as those people are around then there will be warfare to some degree or another.
But of course people don't like to hear that... it upsets their delicacies. Makes them queasy at the notion that humanity hasn't really grown up and won't for some time. So I say, "This will foster 'peace'" when what I really mean is it will increase security. There will be warfare but we will make sure it does not spread out of control. We will extinguish brushfires before they become firestorms.
I only hope... this whole damn thing rests on the notion that we're as close to an impartial arbitrator as can be had, but it also depends on the perception that we're not afraid to enforce it, either. I only hope that we're allowed to act, and not constantly reined in by a bureaucracy afraid of it's own authority.
Speaking of authority... I'd better check in and make sure they get me the necessary accomodations aboard Arcadia. Maybe in a year or two I'll settle down to a desk in GDI HQ, but I want to be there with Arcadia if... when the shit hits the fan, to make sure everything goes smoothly.
I feel sorry for Arcadia's captain... she'll have no less than three flag officers aboard her ship. Jesus! I'd have been up the wall if I'd had three admirals aboard my ship during the war.
Do you really want to go by Captain Pick? I'm not saying you have to use your real name or anything, I'm just wondering if maybe there's not a different name you'd prefer.]
