Wait, is Tasmania part of Australia?
Some of us would hope not.
:D
According to some guy in America what we believe is Tasmania is actually South Korea. :P

[Last call for ship modifications, last call. Vengance, I am looking at you.

Also: Presently taking applications for assistant stat compilers and number-crunchers for designing the battle system. Also open to any suggestions regarding the actual platform. OpenRPG sound good? Pick, how are you at drawing overhead maps? :P]

[Here's a quick description of the funding going on for the superterrorists:]

With the investiture of life into the GDI after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, several nations began to resent the growing power of the armed wing of the United Nations, and the influence the much-pitied United States wielded in the formation of the GDI. Leader among them was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which had been shrinking since the end of the Third World War. Further angered by the loss of international prestive and the perceived rebuff forbidding them from sending troops into Afghanistan, Alekseyev's government wielded influence in the central Asian republics to "accidentally" divert forces away from fleeing Taliban and al-Qaida writers. What began as a childish ploy to spite the United States quickly turned into a distrustful alliance, as the Soviets housed the fugitive Talibans in bitter camps in Siberia. In fact, the Soviet Union kept at least three nuclear missiles trained on the camps at all times, in case the terrorists suddenly became a liability, but did nothing as the ex-Taliban recovered and continued to train.

China, a growing regional power, was becoming increasingly jealous of the United States' apparent superiority. Before World War III, it had appeared on the verge of spending itself into oblivion; the war had reignited the United States' industrial might, and the nation was now consuming raw materials at a heretofore unheard-of rate; while China had five times the United States' people, it had a fifth the industrial capability, and though its recent rapid growth -- 10-12% GDP per year for four years -- was bringing its economy nearly up to the United States', it still lagged technologically and industrially behind the superpower, as well as its hated regional rival, Japan. The United States' support for Japan also worried and embittered China against the superpower; China therefore began looking for ways to destabilize the United States and hurt its economy. Therefore, the Asian nation turned to funding and equipping terrorism, both with new equipment and old surplus Soviet stuff.

Meanwhile, China made a surprising discovery: an informant in the third division of the old Soviet army reported that he had personally seen and trained several arabs in the use of special forces tactics. China went to the Soviet Union with this information, intending blackmail; instead, the Soviet Union produced several incriminating readouts detailing Chinese black market dealings. Rather than submit to blackmail and provide the Chinese with classified information, the Soviet Union proposed a secret alliance with China to undermine the authority and economic supremacy of the United States. Together, over the next two years, they approached several wealthy states which had no cause to love the United States nor the Soviet Union; all of the states agreed to divert funds to support the creation and training of a durable, grassroots terrorist movement stronger than the amateurish al-Qaida could ever have dreamt of being. Hamas, Hezbollah, the IRA, and the remnants of al-Qaida were bought out, and became noodly appendages to the shadowy new player on the world stage.
[Spoilerized, by request.]

[So the GDI's enemy is the FSM?

As long as you're at it, how about some fluff for how Western Europe's been taking things recently? It'd be useful for Vanas and I to have some details on how the EU and ol' Blighty have been faring.]

[I'm still not sure how feasible this setup is, so I'd like to get some more feedback on the proposal before I go on to elaborate on it. Also, I haven't actually read Red Storm Rising, so I'm not the best one to play "what if?" with eastern Europe's future in that timeline.]

[EDIT at 7:04 pm, in reference to the other thread: thank god I don't have to play politics with anyone.]

[Yes, it's beginning to get rather interesting, isn't it? Before the story develops more, however, we need some guidelines.

We need:
  • A designated OPFOR player.
  • People to get the battle system together.
  • An agreement on how much you can speak for another player. Remember, you can really piss someone off by talking for them and spoiling their plans.
  • (Possible) A designated story team. They write the secret background and work with the OPFOR player/Uraniun to make an interesting game. They would also be responsible for all non-OPFOR nations, including the US, Western Europe, and the UN.
More needs as they come to me. Expect additions. I'm glad Uraniun is the one responsible for making sure we have all this crap. :P

Also, like phongn said earlier, we need someone who knows their shit as OPFOR, and that goes double for the storywriters. Maybe a HABite or two who never venture into G&C and therefore have not seen the thread? Otherwise, we are going to have to call for resignations or spectacular reactor implosions. :?

One last thing. Surlethe, that is interesting secret background info, but don't you think it would have been more fun for us to uncover it after playing the story for a while? Maybe do a quick *snip*snip* until we find out how the story is going to work?]

[Well, isn't the point of background to know it before the story's written?]

[Not if it's secret background information that nobody should know yet and could heavily impact the story.

Addendum: I think there has been a bit of a miscommunication. Yes, the background should be known, but we should also have someone or some group who is in charge of writing the story. As much fun as 3-word-per-post story threads are, it would probably be better if we avoided turning the battle group into one.

Of course, I am just talking out my ass here. It could be that Uraniun intended for exactly that when he created the CVBG, so it would be better for him to make the decision. All I am asking for, presently, is a temporary hold until we get a clearer picture of the intent. Speak to us, Lord Uraniun! Descend from on high with your benevolent Happycat retinue!]

Say. Since there's a specifically IC thread now, we don't need the brackets anymore, do we?

Anyway, I'm against this being too regulated. Actually going on ship's statistics and number-crunching would be far too restrictive- I think it'd be better to just have a map of the battlefield and someone who knows what they're talking about to say 'Nup, that wouldn't work' at appropriate intervals.

Hey, let's really fast establish where the task forces are right now. I'm currently steaming north out of Pearl, so I assume ESG-28 is moving around somewhere in the northern Pacific, maybe near Midway. Apparently, CSG-5 is still sitting in Norfolk on the other side of the continent. How's that sound?

Well thats my bad. Is it still possible to be the commander of the airwing for the MEU then?

I agree that with the other thread, we can drop the brackets if we want.

Surlethe: The CSG is definitely in the Atlantic. Noble Ire's post indicates that, at the least, the amphibious carriers are in Norfolk as well. It could be that you're currently en route to link up with the ESG.
Of course, I am just talking out my ass here. It could be that Uraniun intended for exactly that when he created the CVBG, so it would be better for him to make the decision.
Honestly, this grew into something a hell of a lot bigger than I'd anticipated. I figured everyone would take a ship, we'd all have a laugh, and then we'd get bored of it and it'd get flushed down the Testing Express.

If someone were willing to assume the role of story-master, I would be perfectly happy to step back and focus more on 'being the admiral' and updating The List because I think it'd be fun to just play my character and await with suspense the next development in the big story.

Alternatively, I'm willing to assume further control and start plotting out what's going to happen and what the rest of you will know about it..

Part of it is that Raptor's been putting out some pretty good stuff, and I'm not sure exactly where he's going with it and I don't want to step on his toes.

I will be blunt and admit that I have had zero experience with TGOD/STGODs in the past, so whatever you guys can suggest with regard to a battle system would be awesome. (Surely there have been such threads done on the internet which have involved naval forces!)

As to character conventions, I would suggest that if you're uncertain about what the other character in a conversation would say, there are a number of ways to resolve this:

1) Make the post as you like, but be prepared to change or even junk it entirely if the other person disapproves.
2) Send a draft of the post via PM to the other person for their approval before posting.
3) Discuss with the other person how their character might respond to your character.

How about Harrison? :P

It kinda makes more sense that the TF is based out of an Atlantic port, as all the ships are either American or European....

The sweeping revisions to the world map and the appearance of the Flying Chow Mein Monster have killed my campaigns twice now. I'm essentially back at square one, so this would be a good time officially support the idea of a dedicated story team. I have a LOT of free time, and I like writing, but I'm nowhere near the most knowledgable person about these things. I'm more than willing to tell the story, but I want it to be a joint effort. Specifically, I want Surlethe and phongn in on it. I can do as much or as little as they want me to, but I want to know everything about everything so I can develop my character.

Already said, leaving the ship stock. I mean, it's a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke. That means 2 Seahawk copters, 2 VLS, Sea Sparrow, 5" gun, and 2 triple torpedo tubes. Since I'm not trying to be an honorable pirate anymore, I'm fine with that layout.

This is gonna sound wierd but for my final mod I want a couple of GIANT speakers on my ship. Ones that can literally be heard half the world away. If we're going to be blasting terrorists I want them to hear the glories of western rock music before a couple of tons of ordnance hits 'em.

How about a radio transmitter that jams terrorist radio's by outpowering their transmissions, and plays rock music over them?

I have a fresh Mediawiki (same as Wikipedia) install ready to go. Register and then contact me if you want to be promoted to admin, though that probably won't be necessary since surely none of you will troll it.

This is hosted on my home computer, which is plenty powerful enough and almost always on, so it should be good enough for this purpose. Contact me if there is anything else I can do.
