Steel Panthers WinWW2 AAR

Post by MKSheppard »

Doing a full long campaign from 1941 to 1945 as the USSR.

Formed up in June 1941 using a Medium Tank Battalion of 32 x T-26 M1939s.

First battle was a DRAW, lost 12 tanks and 54 men, but destroyed 2 German Tanks, 3 German Mortars/Guns, and 261 men.

The T-26s and BT-7s get a lot of bad press, but in 1941, they really aren't that bad of a tank; everyone fixtates on the mighty T-34, and forgets that the majority of the tank parks for everyone was relatively light vehicles; and in 1941, the Infantry really did not have very good anti-tank weapons, making a charge by a Battalion of T-26s a deadly thing to German Infantry.

Battle 2: DRAW

1 x T-26 Destroyed, 4 AT Guns destroyed, 43 men lost.

vs

10 x Pz IIIs destroyed, 91 German Troops lost.

I bought a AT-Gun Battery composed of 47mm L3x guns, along with several companies or was it platoons of conscript infantry to support my core tank battalion, and laid them out like so

Image

with my Tank Battalion sitting in reserve, and the conscripts and ATGs screening them.

Final Battle Results:

Where to download SPWW2?

More importantly, can we do an SPMBT + SPWW2 crossover, where it's T-90s versus Pz IIIs?

If you want to, the games use the same engine, so you could use MOBHACK.

Oh, Syria from 1951 to 1967 has PzIVGs and Hs, and France from 1946 to 1949 has Jagdpanthers in WinMBT.

Just set them as "Captured" equipment, heheh.

Pardon me for asking, but what would you want to do that scenario for? Just to see how many PzIII's the T-90's can shred through before the main gun overheats?

Oh, I see they finally upgraded from the DOS version. I couldn't get that one to work so I started playing World at War from Matrix Games instead. I do have Main Battle Tank, mostly because it's been a while since the Windows version came-out.

Maybe I'm spoiled, but I think the AAR needs more detail. Though it's really nice you've provided pictures.

Anyone know how SP:WinWW2 and SP:WaW compare? Should I stick with what I have or is WW2 better? I was kind of dissapointed to find that MBT has only 160 scenarios to WaW's 340.

Ah Steel Panthers, such a classic game. I've never had the attention/resolve to stick with it for a full campaign. I've still got the budget release of SP 1 disc. While I liked the breadth of the game, I prefer the Close Combat series. I handle real time games better, I find I suffer from a lack of patience in turn-based games. Mostly because I find it hard to comprehend the passage of time I think, I tend to always be moving full distance when I should be sitting back. Have not played it for a long time, maybe I'll give it a second chance.

I wish you good hunting Shep.

Well, a really detailed AAR makes it impossible to actually PLAY the game, since you're constantly taking pictures and notes and then writing it all up afterwards.

Let me put it this way:

-----------
Maximum Units per Country:

SP:WAW: 255 units and formations per OBAT file

WinSPMBT/WinSPWW2: 999 units, and 999 formations per OBAT file

---------

Maximum Map Sizes

SP:WAW: 100 x 240 hex maps; 24,000 hexes

WinSPMBT/WinSPWW2: 160 x 200 hex maps; 32,000 hexes

------------

Maximum Hill Heights:

SP:WAW: 3 terrain height levels.

WinSPMBT/WinSPWW2: 15 terrain height levels.

I feraking love Steel Panthers. It was my first real strategy game. And it still kicks major ass. I just need to figure out how to mod it and turn it into a Sci-Fi game. Then I would be my own personal god.

But as it is, I am exceptionally thankful that you have provided that link to a download of a non-DOS version.

Considering that the amount of Soviet units in WaW was confusing enough this isn't exactly an attention grabber.
Maximum Map Sizes

SP:WAW: 100 x 240 hex maps; 24,000 hexes

WinSPMBT/WinSPWW2: 160 x 200 hex maps; 32,000 hexes
And considering that I avoid the largest maps like the plague this isn't very convincing either.
Maximum Hill Heights:

SP:WAW: 3 terrain height levels.

WinSPMBT/WinSPWW2: 15 terrain height levels.
This, however, intrigues me.

I'm going to go download it anyway, but what I'd really like is a better method of handling large amounts of tanks, trucks, artillery, and infantry platoons. I don't play the largest scenarios because I tie myself in a horrid knot trying to co-ordinate so many units at once. It's not like in the Total War games were the soldiers, cavalry, and artillery are conviniently arranged into large blocks you can command as a single entity.
