Not being a hardcore painter myself, I would defer to the wisdom of the more dedicated, but if it were just me I'd start with the darkest shade (i.e., a ruby would start with Scab Red) then drybrush on successive lighter shades (Red Gore, Blood Red) and if feeling particularly adventurous, mix the lightest shade with white and make a little shiny-thing on the tip.

Well, besides what GW's site says about painting Eldar gems and Marine eyes, I'd suggest applying the lighter colors by watering them down rather than the typical straight drybrush method; I find layered highlights blend much better by using very thin, uncharged applications. It's a lot like drybrushing but the paint is mostly water.

The GW technique:
Darkest shade all over.
Highlight all but a cresent at the top with a lighter shade
Highlight a cresent at the bottom with a lighter still shade
Add a dot of white paint to the darkest part.
It actually works very well on lenses as well as gems. I dont find it does quite so well for marine eyes though. The round shapes work best for it.

I just had my first game of cities of death against a space wolf army.
My luck held out as usual. He took Sewer Runners and had everything except his Wolf Priest, Wolf Lord and Wolf Guard was in reserve. Turn one he couldnt seem to pass a single terminator armour save. By the end of my turn two his wolf guard was gone and his Lord and Priest were on 1 wound each.
After that his squads appeared one at a time and while they took out my assault marines and dreadnaught none of them survived the counter fire. I took a "Ammo Dump" and used it on a tall building that held my devestators (four missile launchers) and my tech marine with servitors (plasma cannon and two heavy bolters). Rerolling misses with all those made for some sickening salvoes.

how'd you get Grey knights in there?

Why is it a multi-Chapter force? D:
And why are the Grey Knights an HQ choice? They're a normal squad and thus a Troops choice; if you want the chaplain to join them then I don't think there's anything stopping you, but they're still Troops.

They're filling the Command Squad slot in the Marines codex. This is standard Marines force with Daemonhunters allies, not vice versa. Although if I can have only the Chaplain on his own as the HQ choice, then I'll happily toss the Grey Knights into Troops... they function either way.Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:Why is it a multi-Chapter force? There is no such thing as a Grey Knights command squad, only Terminator retinues for a Grey Knight Hero, so yes, you must buy them as a Troop squad under the basic Grey Knight troop squad entry in the DH codex, regardless of which way you're allying (though if you do it the other way around, of course, you can't have both GKs and SMs in the same army).

How the Hell did you get 188 points with your Chaplain? If he is a Reclusiarch the max he can have is 185. More over, why'd you want a HQ that costly in 750 games?
Which route are you trying to go with, assault or shooty? It looks like Shooty with some counter assault from the Chaplain and his buddies plus the Dread. I don't know anything about the Grey Knights, so I won't comment on them, but as I stated above your HQ is sucking up an ungodly amount of points for such a small game.
Drop the Frags/Flamers on the Tacs and make them 5 mans if you are going the shooty route. Your math is also off on both Tac Squads; the Missile Launcher squad should cost 176 and the Heavy Bolter squad should cost 171.

I really should just drop by a convenience store and look for standard plastic primer black spraycans; GW *still* hasn't shipped any to my area and if I wasn't busy sculpting Marines I'd be pissed. I've also got that Death Company and Blood Priest to prime in white first, as well.
The trip over there itself wasn't totally bust, though; I picked up a Rhino and Whirlwind for $35 total, and a couple Ork and Sororitas blisters.
EDIT: Ah-hah, seems the other store finally got a GW shipment in, those poor shafted Rogue Trader outlets. Grabbed a can after work on that side of town and will have to prime up a few things later today.

Question: On the Macragge models(which have 3 or 4 pieces, tops) does it make more sense to paint the components seperately? I can see why you'd need to glue everything togather for the "real" models, but it seems like it'll make more sense for macragge models to paint piece by piece.

3 pieces for the Sergeant, 2 for the rest, not counting bases... Yeah, paint 'em apart, that's what I do. Just base 'em first, it gives you something to hold onto.Lonestar wrote:Question: On the Macragge models(which have 3 or 4 pieces, tops) does it make more sense to paint the components seperately? And the 'real' models, actually you can glue some of the portions up before assembling-- shoulder plates, guns, and the like. Just do a little initial test-fitting to ensure they all come together right. Myself, I prefer to glue up weapons to arms, head and backpack to body to legs, and glue shoulder pads to arms, and paint those separately so you don't have to do any of that fiddly poking around with the paintbrush to get everything.

so, basing them...I just wedge them in there while cursing?

Well, I started priming again today, primed 3 Warriors, 3 Death Co. Marines, 3 Heavy Weapon Marines, my Sanguinary Priest, and about half a dozen backpacks and shoulder pads.
I also finished up pretty much all the greenstuff work on my Commander, Chaplain, and Honor Guard, so they can be primed tomorrow along with my Razorback and the first of my Landspeeders.
That backpack is one of the Vet's. I dunno if I'll make one like it for the Commander, but I'll think of something similar for him.

You've got some friggin' skillz with greenstuff, man. I've been swearing profusely at my Guardsmen just trying to sculpt some simple rifle straps.

Plus we've already known about and seen the plastic Dire Avengers, Warwalkers, Wraithlord, and Heavy Weapon platforms.
