Can Borg fuck?

Post by kheegster »

Can the Borg reproduce? We see the Borg Queen getting amorous with Data in STFC, but can they reproduce, or is assimilation their only way of increasing their numbers?

Sexual reproduction would be against the Borg's purpose.

If you remember from that episode of Voyager where they had a "29th century Borg", Seven said that the Borg use maturation chambers, which are suppose to speed up the growth of babies and fetus's so the Borg can completely assimilate them.

It was that episode where some of Sevens nanoprobes melded with the Doctors mobile emitter during a transporter accident, or a shuttle accident. He called himself "One" and sacrificed himself (much to Sevens sadness, since it was technically her son) so that Voyager could escape some Borg cubes.

I'd say it'd be more of a combination of incest and mastubation.

I'm not sure about this, but did the borg achieve total reproduction capabilities in the 29th century?

Actually the drone utilized 29th century technology but was a 24th century drone. So we can't answer that question. Though the Federation being Galaxy spanning at that time would indicate that the Borg might not exist anymore.

The Borg might have been wiped out in "End-Game", so that's not entirely implausible.

PS. What do we actually know on direct observation about these 29th century Feds? I never watched much Voyager, and I'm unfamiliar with the source. The only item I know of is that silly holo-emitter (you'd think such a device would come with some kind of impact protection so that a child can't disable the whole works by hitting it with a stick; I've seen it go down from a hit which wouldn't faze a modern cell-phone).

I think it's been said that 29th century feds use time travel often and have protected themselves from changes in the timeline or something like that.

But their ships still suck. A 29th c ship was destroyed by a 24th c one.

Invalid example and you know it. A 29th Century SHUTTLE was destroyed by a 24th Century CRUISER. Its pretty clear that the 29th Century ship was not optimized for combat. Just look at what Janeway did to her shuttle in End Game, and thats because she had some ambitions. A better example would have been if the Wells class time ship had engaged Voyager, which it did not.

IIRC the 31st century invaded Enterprise.

Let's see...

A long-range shuttle/peronal transport can put up a decent fight against the Voyager(Future's End)

They can open rifts through which you can instantly skip through time/space.(Future's End)

Safety regulations have plummeted further. A malfunction from that single-person craft will induce a nova(Fucking psudeoscience.. Future's End)

They are not immune to changes in the timelines. (Future's End, Braxton saying he has no knowledge of the timeline where he crashed.)

There's another episode with Braxton, where he demonstrates a transporter that 'loops' Seven repeatedly in an attempt to find a bomb. Anyway, the Thought Police get him in the end.

The question of whether the Borg actually reproduce their own original species (call them 'Species 1') is complicated by the contradictory way the Borg have been developed throughout the Next Gen and Voyager stories.

Originally, the Borg were meant to be all members of one species. The episode with the 'Nursery' ('Q Who') implied that the young were grown in a vat (aka 'A Womb With a View'). Certainly I would be very surprised to hear that the 'classic' TNG Borg reproduce sexually. They seem more like hive insects than a humanoid species.

Later (especially during the Voyager-era wussification of the Borg), it became clear that the vast majority of drones were from assimilated species. That made the reproduction issue a bit more problematic, as there is no guarantee that, even when assimilated, those species are genetically compatible.

However, the most important phrase is from the Borg's own 'doomsday' announcement: "We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own." From that, it is clear that the Borg are trying to perfect themselves biologically as well as technologically. This implies that they do clone new drones from genetic material. They may be attempting to create a 'perfect' genome with all the biological traits the collective wants in its' individual units. When that happens, I imagine they would start using huge cloning vats to replace the 'imperfect' previous drones with the new 'perfect' specimens.

Slightly beside the point: I once read a fanfic (and no, it wasn't pr0n), where the Borg were kidnapping and partially assimilating humanoid males and females as part of an experiment as to whether they could make sexual reproduction (with the unpredictable genetic end result in the zygote) to work for them. I think they grabbed Troi and Riker went after them, but I am not sure.
