TheDarkling wrote:When we start talking about the Soul we get into rather odd territory but I do wonder why these question never occur to the races that use the transporers, for example we know the Bajorans believe in a soul yet they have no concerns.

We know that Humans still believe in souls because in Measure of a Man one of the question raised is wether Data has a soul also Picard isnt shocked that an after life and God exist (Ref Tapesty) until he finds out its Q.

Therefore the magical energy could be what they define as a soul and I would agree the ability to trap someones soul in a device is chilling.
but then in other episodes they imply the idea of a soul or god as arcaic. sometime you wonder what they actually mean.

I cant remember them saying the idea of a soul was primitive however I do remember some slights aginst God.

Maybe they just dont like organised religion or are agnostic.

They can't be agnostic. They actually met God, remember? And they've met several gods from different religions, and even more apparently omnipotent beings.

But they have met Greek/Roman gods, and the Prophets, and lots of other god-like beings.

They've also killed god, repeatedly. What religion is that?

 That's true. They've killed many gods. And Kirk has blown lots of Klingons to their gods, and Sisko has blown many Jem'Hadar to their gods, and lots of people have tried to kill the Prophets, and Sisko helped kill the Pawraiths, and....

Yes but they always refer to them as aliens - The wormhole aliens for example.

The Jem Hadar gods are the founders and I dont think you will find many Feds thinking they are gods.

Just a question... How did y'all get from; 'Transporters are Dangerous' to talking about Gods?

It was to do with the metaphysical repercussions of the transporter on the Human soul.

But the Bajorans clearly thought of the prophets as gods. And what about the Pa'wraiths? Dukat thought that they were gods. I think that this might have to do with a SF dismissal of religion.

The Bajorans may believe that the prophets are gods but the humans no longer seem to believe in organised religion.

We dont really know what the other Fed races think about gods etc.

NTM the holodeck. :D
How about Federation design, period?

Like using only one type of fail-safe for the Warp Drive?

Hoo boy.

On Topic: I agree transporters are too dangerous and unpredictable to use.

You have to remember that almost every SF transport accident is due to some strange circumstance - people just beaming around Earth or to and from a transport will have no complaints.

The frequency of the accidents is what makes Transporters dangerous. Simply using a shuttle would decrease the accident rate at least a hundredfold.

If they are crazy enough they could keep warp cores on the planet (wouldnt be a very good idea but this is SF we are talking about).

Oh yea, Communists don't have those.. Silly me.

Still, I'd prefer to drive, the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, a good tune blaring... And if Transporters are that prevelent, I got the road all to myself, baaaaaybe.

If Roman roads can survive 2000 years, American roads can survive threehundred.
