Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS

Post by DPDarkPrimus »

Is anyone else looking forward to this?

Offical website

Go and watch the Movie. The trailer is spectacular, and they no doubt WILL have cinematics at that quality on the cart. But even if they DIDN'T, oh man, the graphics!

Gamestop has the US street date at November 1st. I've already pre-ordered.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. FFIII is pretty snappy, so the chance to play it properly will be nice.

Since they've done what looks to be a complete redux from ground up instead of "We'll slap a cinema scene on the beginning and end."...yeah looking forward to it.

I hope they add a fucking save spot in the last dungeon. Fucking A that place was long.

I have been breathlessly anticipating this title since its remake was a mere rumor. The fact that it's a genuine, from-the-ground-up remake instead of a polished port makes me absolutely ecstatic. This is the only Final Fantasy game I have never played and, ironically, it looks like the one I would probably love the most. Only...

Bitch mode engaged: I have to buy a fucking $100 handheld that has NO other titles that look even remotely interesting! Ugh! At least the DS is backwards compatible. MY GBA is seriously starting to show its age. Maybe I should get a can of silver paint.

You're only saying that because you don't know about any of the games.

I'll write up some / copy some info about games to inform you.

That's a distinct possibility. The selection around here is positively anemic.

I can provide you with online places to purchase from. Some of the games I have to reccomend are import-only anyway.

You should know that the DS can play GBA games too. That alone makes the purchase price of $120 it totally bearable, as a new SP runs for $80, and a GB Micro at $100.

The cool thing about the DS and GBA is that none of the games have region protection, so importing is absolutely painless. Really, if you were fluent in Japanese, you wouldn't have to wait for US release dates ever- alas, games like Xenosaga I & II are so text-heavy, importing them wouldn't do me much good.

Mario Hoops 3 on 3 commerical

You simply cannot watch that commercial and tell me you don't want to play the game. I'm saying that as a blanket statement to everyone.

The game looks fun, but...why the hell did they get a skinny Japanese guy for Mario?! He's an overweight Italian plumber from BROOKLYN (my hometown, incidentally)!

Because it's part of a series of ads with the comedy duo Ninty-Nine, and it's funny.

IIRC, you'll be able to quick save at any point in the game, due to the handheld nature of the DS.

As for me, I definitely intend to get FF3. We'll just ignore the fact that I still haven't beaten FF2 Dawn of Souls yet.

Yeah heard about the quick save...which still is nice. I could not stand the length I spent there.

Still I find it funny that Onion Knight is an extra class :D

Aw, man: between this, the reprint of Phoenix Wright, the Mega Man Zero and ZX titles, and all of the stuff for the Wii and the fact that I still have to pick up a DS, my wallet's going to be bled dry until at least next year...

Any word on a foreseeable price break for the european lites? PlayAsia's the only site I've seen with them, and those're upwards of $179.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

Why wait for the reprint when you can import the Best Price version from Play-Asia for the same price? It has Japanese and English language versions on it.

(Psst- buy Ouendan! as well. It's like DDR for your fingers.)

Sample Ouendan level.

They can't put those cinematics on the DS. It can't be possible. It's a handheld...

Oh, for a good GBA game, get Drill Dozer. It's $9.99 at Best Buy, and is a fun creative little platformer with a built-in Rumble Pak.

So? There's CGI cinematics on my copy of Metroid Prime: Hunters. Let me see if I can dig up some screenshots of those....

Official trailer- the cinematic at the end is in the game- it's the first boss reveal.

Video of the rival Hunters, with their opening credit cinematics

Super Mario Bros 64 DS looks BETTER than Super Mario 64. Ask Utsanomiko if you don't believe me- he was freaking out over how many more polygons the Goombas and Mario was, and how much better the textures were.

That was amazingly cool.

I don't see what's so shocking about cinematics, after all they're just prerendered FMVs, so it's the same as playing video, which is something even the GBA can do technically, and the DS is even more powerful than that, like a souped up N64.

What I'm loving is just how versatile the DS has been proving itself to be, and how much niche-ish stuff is both being made and getting popular.

Remember back before and right when it came out, everybody thought the touchscreen was just a risky gimmick?

Slightly off-topic, but yes, Ouendan is greasy sweet. Even if you do have to import it.

As I said.... I have my DS Lite hooked up to my home theater system.

I need to record myself playing and put it on Youtube. :P

OUENDAN!

Okay, now, to make this not totally off-topic...

RARE (= GOOD) DS GAMES:
Advance Wars DS
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Phoenix Wright - getting a rerelease 9/10

Good games for playing with people (with a lot of DS games, you only need one cart for multiplayer):
Tetris DS (It's TETRIS!)
Mario Kart DS (It's MARIO KART!)
Metroid Prime: Hunters (Best portable deathmatch since Faceball!)
Meteos (TETRIS-ESQUE!)

Other good games:
New Super Mario Bros
Kirby Canvas Curse
Lost in Blue
Trace Memory

Do you like Opera? The Nintendo DS Browser just hit Japan. No support for flash, and don't expect to be loading graphic-intensive pages blazingly-fast, but it is by all accounts better than the PSP browser. No US release date yet, but it's import-friendly and won't run you more than the usual import cartridge.

WHERE TO BUY IMPORTS FROM:
Play Asia
Yes Asia
