Turst me you're not alone in that. It's a phenomomnen amongst at least me and my friends (and probably lots of others) - those bastards churn out all this awesome stuff and we all go "OMFG I WANT THIS ARMY/NEW UNIT" whenever we go flipping through a new codex or sneak peak and such, which naturally we cannot afford nor feasibly support on top of our current armies (I',m already trying to juggle a Guard army in the process of ground-up overhaul and critical rebuild, two SM armies, some Inquisitors hanging out along with some Sisters, Orks, some Emperor's children, and I'll want Deathwatch dudes when they come out with Alienhunters. Oi).Utsanomiko wrote:Two months ago I didn't even know what units Eldar had beyond 'a bunch of shooty stuff that looks the same' and I've never been interested in the Eldar as an army, and yet I'm excited.
(apologies for incoherency (I am turning into Yosemite bear), got widosm teeth out and I'm on some crazy ass paikillers and shit)

Well you could go by the conspiracy theory that has floated about, please don your tinfoil. Andy Chambers was quite the fan of the Orks, when he left GW and Gav Thorpe, the Eldar man, took over, the Orks went down on the list and the Eldar were bumped up.Lazarus wrote:I'm still puzzled as to why Eldar got a new codex before Orks. Not that I'm complaining, the Eldar were in need of a re-jigg, I suppose the waiting list goes on the equality of the army in terms of ability, which explains why Tau got a new one.

I've finally decided to take the plunge and start investing in an army. Bought BfM to get the rules and some models to experiment with for painting techniques, but am going Tau for actual army. So far I only have a Pathfinder Shas'ui and a Gun Drone (I need a new blade before I can cut off the antennae for Shield Drones), but either next week or the week after I'll get the battlebox. The whole long-range shooty army and "Fish of Fury" shoot-and-scoot just appeals to my style of play, and I like the look of the models. I also love the concept of the gun drones on vehicles, being able to drop them off when desired, as well as the eggshell-with-a-sledgehammer that is the Piranha with a Fusion Blaster. And Vespid just make me happy. Jump troops with an AP3 gun.

My Mark1 New Marine Chapter color scheme is more or less done, and they most certainly look like a Team America chapter. Still trying to find a logo for their chapter though.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Well, to keep up the "Team America" theme, the Guard vehicle transfer sheet has some fists-with-lighting-bolts, that, IIRC look like something SAC would use, and also some stars-in-white squares (though those may be a bit big.)
Just played my first two games with my 1st-and-10 army--60 scout snipers and a command squad in 5 suits of termie armor. Narrow victory on both, really need to learn to deploy better. And carry more heavy armor breakers.

Bear Translation: The Eldar Harlequins are getting new sculpts... But if I were to state that in clear & direct terms I'd die and turn into dust...
In more relevant news, I've got a WIP photo of my Marine Commander.
He currently just has basecoats and first layers of paint. Pretty close to the original lineart I did. I've also got one more Assault Marine done, my Chaplain and Vet Assault Sergeant half-finished, and I've got a lot of my Razorback's interior coated and almost ready to put together for exterior painting. I'll need to pick up a pot of Tamiya black paint tomorrow or Monday to pick up the pace.

Nice. Regarding the Captain, though:
His skin looks awfully pale, is that intentional, side-effect of the camera...?
The sculpted breastplate also doesn't seem to show up well. Too black, IMO - a company commander deserves a little bit of ornamentation, maybe make the chest a little more gold (or whatever color)?

It's a bit of both. The camera washed out what colors and highlights are there, as I was just getting an image to put online and stuck an envelope behind them as a backdrop.
I originally had in mind putting a Crux Terminatus around his neck, but it ended up looking a bit big and I haven't settled on using it or not. Other than that he's fancy enough; I don't want to turn him into a blatant 'shoot me' beacon.

Ahem. How does one work with white, to make individual details stand out while preserving the overall whiteness? I've got a project in the works, but I can't quite work it out yet...

Drybrush? It's how I do my Apothecaries. Spray white, paint on another coat, do some detail coloring, then drybrush liberally with metal.

Feathers are involved. I want to give them a sort of golden shimmer as well, which would be nice...Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:Drybrush? It's how I do my Apothecaries. Spray white, paint on another coat, do some detail coloring, then drybrush liberally with metal.

Shading is more useful then, a very very thin blue or black wash into the recesses works well with a white highlight over the top again.

If you want slightly more goldeny feathers, then after putting the wash on them as Keevan suggested, successively drybrush them with bleached bone and then skull white, and then a very very light gold drybrush (too much would ruin the effect and look crass though). That will give you a slightly warmer tone than just a white drybrush alone, and give some depth to the gold, even though there's not a lot of it.

Yes, they are, in Codex rules as well as background & style. In fact I recently finished painting my Honor Guard and completed another HQ unit while I'm waiting to finish up the Death Company:The Yosemite Bear wrote:Uts are your marines based on Blood Angels?
Sanguinary High Priest Dioscorus. Just someone under 150 points to control the Death Company in smaller games. I'll have a cherub carrying a grail as wargear on a separate base for him or my Chaplain to use. I started assembling him a few months ago on a whim once I got some new stuff in, just slapping together parts I hadn't yet planned on using. I got to this stage and then kept on adding. It was a challenge to paint, but I had my Death Company marines to practice with painting white.

I still love them
Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.
