So you're saying a man who patiently worked a plan for 40-50 years straight, and waited until the right moment to strike, would after gaining ULTIMATE POWER, throw all caution to the wind and start enlisting fallen jedi left and right, along with training cadres of sith acolytes?

I can understand keeping Vader as a hachetman, since Vader is crippled and weak after Obi Wan did a number on him, and because Palpatine is all he's got left, so he'll be loyal; but each person he trains in the sithly arts is one more that could potentially overthrow him. Remember, he started out as plageuis' apprentice and killed him...

Yeah, and Plagueis taught him everything he knew. He didn't teach most of these pawns shit. More of them were like Mara Jade than anything else. And remember, Vader's crippling was unintended and undesired. It was because of that he wanted a more powerful apprentice in Luke. You forgeting about "Lord Vader will become more powerful than either of us!"?

Regarding RedImperator's storyline:

Suppose we made a version of it by simply taking certain characters who already exist in the current EU. Who are most similar to Palpatine and Palpatine II?

Nobody. If we're going by Red's model you simply have to throw out most of the EU. Its perfectly fine from a purist point of view.

As for the assertion that his version of EU would be more "dry"- well, I could understand that in the sense that it would be very much focused around political maneuverings. However, just because the EU is more focused on one conflict doesn't mean that there isn't plenty of opportunities to introduce readers to interesting new planets, alien species, etc. There just wouldn't be any with the capability of destroying planets, or greatly upsetting the balance of power, or whatever.

Personally, that's the problem. With that you get a bunch of tiny-shit episodic one-out type stories that remind me of the weekly rotation of Trek. Red's scenario makes political sense from a purist point of view, but without the Force, Jedi, and Sith in any form and without the Alliance winning out, its not Star Wars.

And that's aside from other personal aesthetic preferences that I don't like about it.
