Dispatches: What British Muslims Want.

Post by Dartzap »

Did anyone else cath this last night? It actually made me furious and scared at the time in some places. Why the hell did some of them beleive that they should be exempt from our culture of mocking religion? and their opinion that 'All non-muslim women in Britain are mistreated' :wtf: The funniest bit of it (as well as one of the more worrying) was the teenagers in Stoke thinking there was a giant Islamiphobia conspiracy in the world. The other mos worrying fact was that it was the more educated people who were turning back to Islam for the majority of their values, and not connecting with their homeland at all.

Can anyone link to a transcript, partial or otherwise, or anywhere I could find footage from this? I don't exactly have access to Brit television here in the States...

Didn't watch it, but what you describe is exactly what I expected them to report. Stuff like this always makes me wonder just how representative the show is really being. The documetary will have the vast majority of interviewees as nutjobs, but is that really proportionate to the people they represent, or did Dispatches just weight it in favour of the "look out, be scared" result they wanted.

It's not like Christians, Sikhs and Jews are at all sensitive about such things  All religions are the same in this respect.

Reading the tabloids in this country could easily lead you to thinking this. In any case, fundies of all flavours tend to think this of their religion.

I'd LOVE to see the research backing up this ascertion. Living in a 'middle class' and highly multi-cultural London suburb that appears to have a complete absence of any religious tensions, it is pretty clear to me that it is poverty in the main that breeds extreme views.

It's a TV programme - sane people aren't entertaining.

Unfortunately I missed it due to being at the Electronica Showcase in Bolton, but I doubt it'd really surprise me. On the other hand, I would assume they would go for the more insane people for a more itneresting programme. However, I also know from personal experience that when a perfectly "normal" muslim will trust you, they'll tell you how the world is run by the jews and how Israel is the bad guy in the middle east and be totally partisan on the issue, as well as view the history of islam with totalyl rose-tinted glasses.
Why the hell did some of them beleive that they should be exempt from our culture of mocking religion?
They venerate their religion beyond all reason, so they don't want to be offended by people mocking it. I've heard it said that people's religions shouldn't be able to be mocked, in casual conversation since it "stirs up hatred," I wouldn't think this is an uncommon view at all.
and their opinion that 'All non-muslim women in Britain are mistreated'
Common view of the muslim world, they think that because they tell their women how to dress (and beat the shit out of them if they don't), we do the same and "dress them like whores". When they realise that we allow women to dress themselves, they think we should morally police them.
The funniest bit of it (as well as one of the more worrying) was the teenagers in Stoke thinking there was a giant Islamiphobia conspiracy in the world.
To be entirely fair, it does exist to some extent, but then again the muslim extremists always seem to be more ready to commit to violence. Maybe other religions' extremists are just more cowardly. I mean, when "pisschrist" was unveiled, I don't recall reactions like those over the mohammed cartoons.

It always scares me when that happens; it's happened a couple of times to me, most recently with a Roman Catholic chap who I thought was relatively normal. We've chatted, we've sometimes gone into religion, not often. It was about the time when the ferry sank in Egypt, when he remarked that all the bad things were happening in the Middle East and went on to expound upon his theory that all recent events from the tsunami through to the war on Iraq were God's retribution on the middle east. Words failed me, to be honest. It makes you wonder what everyone else is not telling you.

Media hype feeding the scare.

Since it is a TV show the ones they show are a selection of all the available interviews.
Also you would get similar responses from other religiuos people as well.

Mocking
Religious and political people alike think that it is funny when other views are mocked but can be outraged when their own view is.
Concpiracy
Again a lot of religous and political people will read religion/politics into issues/behavior that are simple human behavior.
