Where are the voiced Lucasarts games?

Post by Stark »

You know the ones, DOTT, Indy, Sam and Max etc. I owned them all in highschool - even though I fair suck at adventure games - and I suddenly want to play them again. Poking around, it's easy to get ScummVM versions of Lucasarts games, but not the voiced ones. Obviously my CDs have been lent, lost and destroyed in the last decade, so what's a guy to do?

Offhand, I'd imagine games with, you know, voicework. Like sounds that make words made by people. :P

Maybe you should ask what ScummVM is if that's what you really want to know. Seriously, why would you ask the opposite of what you want to find out? Don't get pissy that you got a smarmy answer to a stupid question. Learn the lesson: ask better questions.

The short version is this: ScummVM, as a quick google search will tell you, is essentially an emulator that lets you run old Lucasarts games. However, it requires the original data files to run properly. Without the CDs, no voice.

Stark: I'm afraid that chances are good you'll be relegated to looking for abandonware, ebay, or less than legal games if lucasarts.com doesn't have an option for you.

Yeah, I can easily find the datafiles for the 'regular' floppy versions, but I liked the voiceacting in DOTT and Sam and Max. However, finding the cd versions (even images of the CD versions) is apparently very difficult. :(

Can you believe I lent my DOTT cd to someone in grade ten and I never saw it again?

Lesson to be learned: Don't throw/give away your game CDs just because they're ancient. :P
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Same thing happened to my copy of Red Alert, and my Jewel Case of Starcraft. Of course, part of that was remedied by C&C: The First Decade, recently. :D

LOL they weren't ancient when I lost/lent them, they were newish. It's irritating that these days, crap games sit in bargain bins for years and years, but I don't recall seeing the cd versions of Lucasarts games for more than a year or two. Bah I say! :)

You could probably find them on the Lucasarts site itself; it might have an archive of some sort. Failing that, the usual resources-- Amazon, eBay, etc...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

I've got Day of the Tenticle and Sam and Max on hand; I have indiana jones and the secret of atlantis, but it is back home, or missing. The game files are pretty small (~200mb), if you really want them... PM me I guess.

Indeed. I found it and the novelization on eBay a while back. Had issues getting the sound to work on some of the newer systems though.

It was originally going to be made into a movie, but Spielburg didn't think they could feasibly do it with the special effects of the time.

I think it's high time we got a Dig film. With Robert Patrick still playing Boston Lowe.

He's still not too old, by the looks of him in x files just 2 or 3 years ago, so its plausible.

I remember getting all the voiced CDs in some Lucasarts packs, of which there were three. Ended up with Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, all the X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and crossover flight games, Sam & Max, DOTT, Monkey Island games, Dig, and Indiana Jones games. They're in a sealed CD holder case in my office, doubtless to sit there unused for eternity. I also have the three games in the Kyrandia series, made by some other company but easily the equal to any of the Lucasarts adventure games.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

I'll have to look around, I should have my copy of The Dig around here...somewhere. Big somewhere.
