Hipocrisy...simpsons style

Post by RayCav of ASVS »

In the episode where Homer goes to the Naval Reserve, he asks Lisa whether or not she would be proud if her dad went in the naval reserve, and she replied with a "I guess so." Then when he actually goes off, she critcises him for being in the "miltary industrial complex of which I am morally opposed against"!

Lisa Simpson is my least favorite character, and a bitch. She can such TOWNMBS' ass.

I think that Lisa acts like most smart kids...they grasp at ideologies that seem cool and intelectual and later on in life realize how retarded they really are. I used to know a few guys back in college who embraced that anti-US, anti-military industrial complex cryto-communist idelogy because it seemed so kewl, but now as the years have gone by they became more conservative than my dad.

Its just a natural thing smart kids gravitate to and she grow out of it.

Wait.....I'm talking about a CARTOON CHARACTER?!?!?

A cartoon character that's the brain child of a blatant bleeding-heart anti militarist nonetheless.

I wonder if we're actually meant to ignore or laugh at Lisa when she's on one of her high moral crusades, given how frequently she's just blatantly full of shit.

I like Lisa as a set-up character for the other ones. You're right, though, I don't especially like it when she criticizes other people. I like her, though, when she has problems fitting in with the other characters because she is smart. I don't think that Marge adds much to the show. She just kind of exists and occasionally yells at people. She was also responsible for the "country club" episode. One of the worst in Simpson's history. :(

The point was that she really couldn't make up her mind when Homer asked her BEFORE he joined. You think that, if she really was "morally opposed against the military industrial complex" she would have stated so right then and there.

Her response to the Albanian boy's question about how she could support a country that had five percent of the population controlling 95% of the land was very weak. In the Episode, it was "It may not be perfect, but it's the only thing we've got." It should have been a statement that in the United States, land was not the primary commodity--skilled labor was. If she had said that, it would have not only won the debate quickly, but it also might have changed his mind about capitalism and the United States.

Yes I agree, because that means that five percent of the population controlling 95% of the land is a very fair deal.

jeezus you people have no grasp of comedy do you? The moment they actually mock something you support you're all over them, if I flew off my lid every time someone made an anti-liberal joke I'd be incacerated by now. Sheesh.

In any case, Lisa had to make that crack about the Military-industrial complex, I mean, that's the WHOLE POINT of her character, to be the left-wing slightly holier-than-thou intellectual (if not as smart as she thinks she is)

If anything they should have cut the line where she said she didn't mind. The Simpson isn't there to pander to your political ideoligies, it's there to poke fun at just about everything.

Hey I never said you couldn't talk about it, talk about it all you like, all I'm saying is that you guys seem surprised that the Simpsons takes the **** out of almost every single serious issue it mentions.

It means that it is reasonable. Land is really not very valuable in the United States. Skilled labor is the primary commodity. Most people in the US do not grow their own food.

BTW, Homer has a tendency of ignoring the requests/demands of his family, anyway. He forgot to get Lisa's saxophone reed until it was too late; "First you didn't want me to get the horse, now you want me to give him back? Make up your mind!" etc. I think the evidence on Homer's unreliability speaks for itself. I am pretty sure he would have joined the Armed Forces, even if Lisa had told him not to. That does not justify her actions, it's just what I think would have happened.

Of course he would, if only because they still had 15 minutes of the episode to go

Just about every character in the Simpsons reflects some aspect of American culture. Nobody is safe from the shows satire. Thats what makes it great.
Yes, Lisa is too left for me, but I still like her character. I didnt find her rant about the military-industrial complex to be hypocritical. Im pro military but think our whole defense industry has plenty of room for improvement. Can you say pork barrel ?

Anyway, remember in the Navy Reserve commerical they said something to the effect of the Navy Reserve being the "13th line of defense" I thought that was pretty funny. Like I said nobody escapes their satire.

Okay, who thinks Marge has a nice body? :P

I love the show, although not every group ends up under the microscope. As far as I know, the writers have never touched upon atheism, for example. You could easily make a pretty funny show out of that too (Lisa reads a book about formal logic, realizes how fucked-up her religion is, has a crisis of faith but eventually learns that conformity is more important than logic).

Hmmm ... methinks you need to watch more porn.

I never thought about Athiesm in the show. I dont recall any referenes to it either. I thought Lisa was a bit of a non-believer though. At least she is not a believer in the the style of Ned Flanders.

Wasn't there that episode where they found that 'Angel skeleton'. Though that probably was more science than Atheism.Still hilarious though.

I remember Lisa was trying to make the townsfolk understand it was not a "real" angel. But when the angel talked Lisa grabbed on to her mom for comfort even if it was just for a few seconds. I agree it was probably more science than athiesm, but it was an interesting episode.
