Jacen
Simple topic really, what happened to Jacen to make him become such a prick in Betrayal? I remember reading Onslaught and the line "He'd grown up in a family where taking responsibility for others was as much a part of life as breathing, and rejecting that ethic was something that just felt wrong to him."
To me, that implies he cares for others, looks after them, helps them. Ok, fair enough, he goes through the Verege BS in Traitor, but what the fuck makes him become such a target for Lumiya? Why is he willing to take responsibility for others in Onslaught, yet willing to let people blow the shit out of themselves in Betrayal?
The last I saw of Jacen was in The Unifying Force, saving Luke's life from the posion of the amphistaff, then I pick up Betrayal, and he starts acting like a fuck wit, with no connection to Jaina, wanting to kill people, letting people kill themselves when he could save them, etc, and then wiping Ben's memory for fucks sake! Wouldn't Luke or Mara kick his ass if they found out?
I never read Dark Nest, what the fuck happend to him in the space of three books?

Re: Jacen
He goes on a 5-year quest to learn more about the Force after TUF and ends it at the near-begining of Dark Nest, so that changed him a bit. What really makes him become kinda dick-ish, though is learning that he knocked up Tenal Ka and had a daughter, and then having to make Ta'a Chume comatose and subsequently erasing Ben's memory of it (which seems to be becoming a running gag of sorts, if you thing about it...). Afterwards he tries to provoke the Chiss into wiping out the Killiks so they can't harm his daughter, thus begining his fall into dickery
Remember that Palpatine viewed himself as a savior, too, so the mindset behind Jacen's actions might be "how can I do the most and lasting good in the long run". If in the meantime a few eggs are brocken, well, that is just the downside of making an omlett.
The optimist thinks, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid, that this is true.

In simple terms, he pulls a Vader. He finds out he has a daughter and suddenly everything gets thrown out the window because in his opinion, the entire f#()ing Galaxy is expandable if it protects her.Dorsk 81 wrote: I never read Dark Nest, what the fuck happend to him in the space of three books?
I mean he screws with Ben Skywalkers memory (yes Luke and Mara's Son, God I wish they had found out and kicked the shit out of him, oh well) without compunction. He starts an all out bloody WAR because he things extermination now will protect his daughter, even though he doesn't apparently see any DIRECT THREAT to her in his vision of the Galaxy burning. He manipulates the Jedi themselves (because the Jeid are all too f*#(ing stupid to detect him constently mind tricking them all) towards his own ends...
He screws around with the Dark side still, Luke even looks at him in disgust when he tells him to use his anger to make him strong....
As for what happens next, I don't want to even think about the new series of books. After the Dark Nest series, I finally threw in the EU after giving it so many chances....so I couldn't care less about some hacks who think bringing some lame Marval character back along with the Empire is a good idea for a plot...

After going through Vergere's experience, and learning many more techniques from other Force-using groups in the galaxy, he basically believes that he can handle any amount of power without destroying himself.
It's not so much that he's abandoned the idea of responsibility, it's just that he's drawn back into himself, away from any communal bonds with the rest of the Order, and with anyone else except possibly Ben and Tenel Ka, and believes that he can use the Force in any manner he wants in order to preserve "peace."

Well Jacen was a fuckwit in Balance Point, where he decided that NOT saving billions of innocent people was preferable to destroying a Vong fleet assaulting Fondor, and then forced that retarded decision on Anakin. And in the long run, it resulted in the unnecessary destruction of 3/4 of the Hapan fleet, and only half the Vong fleet being destroyed or disabled. Fucking dipshit.

Re: Jacen
That was Agents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse, not Balance Point. Okay read, btw. The Ryn are a nice addition to the SWU.
But yeah, Jacen has this ability where he can be in the worst mindset at the exact wrong moment.
