How to get around Marvel's ignorance

Post by Tychu »

I know that we talked about how older EU is being phased out due to the newer movies or even newer EU.

I just recently purchased Volume 2 of the Darkhorse: Marvel comics run. I dont plan on buying the others mainly because everything that is said in Volume 2 is pretty much phased out and now just silly. Its a good read to get what Star Wars had back in the 70's but it is just silly.

Now instead of the normal "oh it just is the lowest cannon you can possibly have" what i want to do is figure out how do we get around the nonsense and try to make it fit

One thing Why is Jabba the HuT a humanoid thing?

Why in the story about Ben Kenobi is there no mention about the Clone Troopers (real life reason we all know and love, so no use in saying it was 1978). IN the same story why are space pirates even able to attack a Cruiser during the Clone Wars and why give Senator Bail Organa the name Prince Organa?

Why also in the issue about the Skyte (sp?) does the story go that Obi-Wan brought 2 Pupils to the planet one being Anakin Skywalker and the other Darth Vader (again no because it was 1978)

With this i want to break the norm about eh its old EU before Empire came out and we should just forget about it.
Some things we should forget about though (freaking green rabits)

Weren't many of these comics released before ROTJ? So, they'd be working on the original idea?

Because his official title is His Serene Highness, Prince Bail Organa, First Chairman and Viceroy of Alderaan.

I don't know about all of it, but I've heard that the humanoid Jabba was retconned as a subordinate of his posing as Jabba to avoid an assassination attempt.

Obviously the records where altered to hide the truth of who Lord Vader really is. Just as Padme was buried pregnant.

According to GL (well in some interviews anyway) the original scene with Jabba suffered the same problems as the cantina scene. Not enough time and money to go back and redo it, but supposedly he always envisioned Jabba as some sort of slug thingie.

Why exactly do you want to keep the old Marvel comics in the cannon Tychu?

Yes, that's exactly the case. Lucas always planned on matting in a stop-motion creature model over the actor they shot the scene with, shooting it with an actor simply for coverage and I assume just so they could use it in case it didn't work (of course they ended up just simply dropping it and moving many of the lines to Greedo's scene: notice that Han and Greedo have pretty much the same rough exchange as Han and Jabba, Han even recycling a few lines verbatem).

Probably because many of the general situations and timeline are still within the overall canon.

Because there's a lot in the Marvel comics that make the current EU pale by comparison. If you get a chance, check out issues 51-52, "Resurrection Of Evil". That's the story of the building of "The Tarkin", the Death Star superlaser, but no Death Star.

That was one of the best EU stories ever. It had a sub-plot where a group of Imp officers plan on killing Darh Vader before he kills them for any trivial mistake.

Of course, for every story like that, you got three that played out like bad TOS episodes. One that comes to mind involved Luke crashing on some mining planet where he had to save the locals from a band of child-kidnapping lizard people or something. Fortunately, I believe that was one of the story arcs that was eventually purged.

Incidentally, does anyone have a list of the non-canon Marvel comics? I checked on Wookieepedia, and they didn't seem to have anything specific on it, at least not information was easily accessible.

I believe the Marvel comics are officially C-canon just like everything else, so unless a story is contradicted by the recent G-canon prequels or the latest C-canon retcons, they all count.

Spanky and Poe pretty much answered that question. To me I also go by the leave no info left behind (going to school for teaching. NO child left behind thing you know :) )

but yes there are some really good Marvel issues and there are the really stupid ones. But with the resurgence of Lumyia in the Legacy stuff alot of authors are going back to the Marvel run and knowing the original stories helps out quite a bit

I'll also speak up for the recurring supporting characters like Rik, Dani, Giel, Drebble, etc. I still find many of them more compelling than later EU supporting characters.
