X3 - Reunion

Post by xammer99 »

Okay, so i picked this game up the otherday cause it looked neat and sounded fun. I install it, get the patches and the sim was a hoot and very pretty. Then I go to play the actual game...

Does this game ever stop sucking? Seriously the plot line looks interesting-ish, but the whole only save at space stations and the 3rd mission being one that is impossible to fight out so you get set back 30 minutes at least...

So...does it ever get better? Is it worth playin & learnin? Or does it just suck monkies?

I never even got past the second mission, the learning curve was more like a reverse cliff and I never got the hang of it.

The complete and utter omission of a tutorial either in game or in the manual has shitted me off no end. I played X and X2, and thought that X3 would be good, but to be honest I haven't had the time to invest in it yet. I'm only up to the "play tail gunner for the monks" mission...

It does however appear to have a much improved UI over X2.

Oh yeah. Rather than having NOTHING but multi-layered keyboard short cuts, you could now use the thumbhat to navigate menus. And the window system was a little more intuitive (not much though - again, experience probably helped).

I got the Steam version. I'll take Steam over Starforce ANY day.

Just tested the CD key in steam and it did not work, also there is no way I am going to pay for X3, or install anything with starforce so I guess I will not play that game.

Anyone wants a free copy? Just send me twenty to cover the S&H ;), or buy it from steam. Cheaper...

You can save outside of space stations if you purchase salvage insurance from the Goner temple. That was my best friend.

Personally, I found the main plot to be on the short side; much of gameplay is comprised of building up your assets and forces to the point where you can tackle the tougher missions. I thought the game got a bit repetive, but I enjoyed it enough. There are some mods out there, but I haven't checked them out yet. I'm still waiting for a total conversion that makes it into a straight-up space combat sim.

I've played all the X games, and it's all over the place. The first one was very Elite-ish, so it was simple and easy to play (but with a terrible interface). The second and third ones tried to do heaps of other stuff, but the UI is just so retarded and opaque I don't know anyone who's played it out.

And of course it's just EVE for Johnny No-Mates anyway. :)
