IDE to ATA hard drive cable adapter?

Post by Rogue 9 »

Okay, so I need to stick the hard drive from my old computer into my new one. The problem is, the hard drive uses an IDE connection while the motherboard only supports ATA. I know there are adapters for that sort of thing, but where might I get one?

Do you mean IDE to SATA?
If so, this doohickey from Newegg is what you need.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Do you mean to tell me that you made the mistake of buying a motherboard that has no IDE bus at all?

If that's the case, Glocksman's advice is about the only thing that will work short of getting a new HD and then using some means of transferring all the stuff over. But most mobos still have at least one IDE bus, so maybe you should take another look? I've almost missed noticing them when they've been put to the very side of the motherboard and facing outwards instead of upwards.

I actually made a point of getting an IDE capable mobo for the new comp, though I had to do some digging around to find a SATA bus DVD-burner so I can fit both my old HDs in.

I didn't have to do any digging at all for a SATA bus DVD burner; hell, I didn't even check. Came that way.

And yes, I did make that error, it seems. There is a port in there that bears a remarkable resemblance to IDE, but it's a 34-point floppy port instead of 40 pin. I suppose I had assumed that IDE would be on there, to my sorrow.

Right, adapter it is, then.

This is Finland we're talking about. The SATA ones are starting to make an entry here, but most models being sold are still IDE. I expect them to do a quick fade, though, especially when the biggest stocks run dry from the shops.
