Good Giant robot games for PS2

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

Its no small thing that I lOVE Giant Robots, from Escaflowne to Evangelion.

And as far as the PS2 goes, well, I have a few, but I'd love to know what else is out there. Currently I have "Zone of the Enders" 1 and 2. And then "Armoured Core" 2 and 3.

Any ideas?

Other than the handful of Gundam games, that's really about it.

Federation vs. Zeon is a decent rental.

Depends, are you willing to play imported Japanese games? If so I can recommend quite a few. ^_^

Some turn base strategy game you might want to look after...

Super Robot Taisen Alpha and the few others that have been published on this platform...(i think that an Original Generations is going to be published over-sea)
Pretty pretty cool if you grew up with Grendizer, Voltron, Getter Robot and so on and you like the SD style

Ring of Red was cool with a uchronic post-WWII period

Front mission 4 and 5 are pretty good too.

PS2 SRW Games:

Super Robot Wars Alpha 2
Super Robot Wars Alpha 3
Super Robot Wars Impact
Super Robot Wars MX
Super Robot Wars Original Generations (Out later this year)

Out of those Impact is the only one I wouldn't recommend. The Alpha games are part of an ongoing story (ended in 3), while the rest are stand alone.

Another Century's Episode (1 and 2) and Gundam: Climax UC are also good fun, as are the G Generation games.

well i mainly play SRT on my trusty GBA ;)

i always found the OG being the less cool of the bunchs: how can they hope to compare some "unknown" mech to the freaking Ideon or the Neo-Getter with their musical themes...

I'd disagree. I find the originals to be some of my favourites. They're incredibly well designed and scripted for the most part.

Plus you get stuff like this:

I'd stay away from Front Mission 4, it's rather disappointing.
I've heard good things about FM 5 though. If only they'd get off their butts and translate it.

When playing the Japanese versions I just don't feel the connection with the OG robots that I do with the other series' (especially Gundam - lots of memories from my early childhood). Which SRW games are available in English?

none, except the upcoming Original Generations: there is a big clusterfuck about who own the property of the various robots outside Japan...

I like Gundam: Journey to Jaburo.

Battle Engine Aquila looks interesting. Reviewers seem to agree (except the IGN dude, he liked it) it's an okay game, not particularly good, but not bad either.

Ring of Red is a pretty good big stompy robot game. It's a first gen title, so the visuals aren't up to much, but it's an interesting concept (cold war era giant robots), and the animations for when robots blow up, fall over, and generally explode are very satisfying.

Does Zone of the Enders count as a good game?

Gungriffon Blaze was a terribly fun game when it first came out, and can provide a few hours of entertainment, but it got old really fast after clearing the pitifully few missions and playing the limited selection of AWGS.

I always found ZoE to be a soulless and empty experience. It's kinda OK shooting, if you can stand how repetitive it gets.

The second one is much better.

I'll second Ring of Red, it's also got all the nifty infantry fighting alongside your mechs to.

I rather liked Front Mission 4 myself. Then of course there's the other armored core games. Battle Engine Aquila is okay, fun enough to be worth its current price.

And then of course there's Robot Alchemic Drive which is great fun if you're a super robot fan, for those of us who like uppercutting an alien invader througha building and nailing him with a rocket punch when he gets up.

Well Right now I am planing on getting:
Front Mission 4
Battle Engine Aquila (which looks like a LOT of fun)
and Ring of Red, if just because the idea of Coldwar era Mechs sounds Soooooo Cool 8)

Also, heh, found out the guys who made Armored Core games have been busy. Aparently there are FIVE new games/expansions made since I got AC3. Can't wait to look into these too.
