What was the story with Savage: Newerth?

I mean, I played the demo like three years ago. It was pretty silly, but it never seemed to come out, and now I can legally download the full game for nothing. So there's got to be a story there.

IRC, there is a sequel in the works; maybe they are promoting that.

Yeah but the beta was horribly broken, and it was never released in AU? I just got a shock when I saw that it's gone from 'beta that needs work' to 'totally free'. :S
