Really? WA needed DoW, didn't it - even though it installed sort-of 'separately'? Because of the way WA was handled, I couldn't just build another installer to save steps.
Won't DC-only be a bit lame with only Necrons and Tau?

Yes, WA operated like most 'add-ons' since the 90s: A new installer but it used the existing program.

Well, I should explain Tau and Necrons would be the only ones playable; you could still fight everyone else. Lame? Perhaps. But then again, isn't the option to play it without having to worry about the previous two releases something we should encourage game makers to go through?

With WA installed, I still had the 'old' exes, and could still play vanilla DoW without the changes included in WA. That was strange: it wasn't just a linear addon like other things. Although Spellforce and it's addons are similar.

Oh, I thought none of the earlier content would be available. I don't think have just DC would be so bad if they're all playable against: Tau and Necrons are probably the only teams I'd use anyway.

As I recall, the same's been so in a few others; notably Generals: Zero Hour, and Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. So.

I dunno. I want to play with a few of the new units just to do so, but I'm definately playing Necron and Tau first.

I just hope someone makes an installer for people with everything, so you can drop all the data into a single image, run the single installer, and have it do everything. Convienience it good!
Presumably you can play the races offline then? Odd that Dark Crusade stands alone and won't provide the other two games either. Dawn of War Gold (IE, with winter assault) only costs 19.99 now.

How long until DC is out again?
From what I read about DC I get the impression that the other races are not playable offline either without the previous games
According to gamestop, the prerelease shipment will be shipped October 9th. So I imagine you be able to get it a couple days after that.

There was a Sept 25th "hit the stores" US date mentioned by someone who read the info on a publisher's website, so who knows.
