The drop-pod Marines were landing every-fucking-where. They were a general assault on the region, not specific reinforcements for a given Marine squad. The Dreadnought, on the other hand, was.

Most of the really classic ones are already mentioned, but I would like to nominate God of War's intro. Really, all of the cutscenes are fantastic but the opening sequence really stands out.
Spoilers, for those of you who haven't played it:
The opening has Kratos standing on the edge of a cliff. He says something like "The God's of Olympus have abandoned me" and then THROWS HIMSELF OFF THE CLIFF TO HIS DEATH! The game then goes back to several weeks earlier, and as you play the game you learn more and more of his history until you finally see what caused him to attempt suicide at the end.

Clever and witty signature to be inserted here, just as soon as I think of one.

So they were all slaughtered by stupidity for absolutely no reason. That's hardly helping the intro, is it? They could have stayed in their trench for literally twenty seconds and the orks would have been forced to withdraw or be surrounded.White Haven wrote:The drop-pod Marines were landing every-fucking-where. But the Marines didn't know when the Reinforcements would arrive. Hell, they didn't even know the full number of Orks.
They Orks had made their own charge, which got stopped cold by the Dread. With the Dreadnought on their side, the Sergeant figured they could take the few Orks remaining, so called his own charge to take the hill.
Then they found out that there were a lot more Orks to go. What was he gonna do, tell them to run away?

But they didn't know that the Marines were coming. Also, they didn't know just how many Orks they were. But they did know that unless used, that Dreadnought would have been dead meat to whatever it was that killed the Predator. So it was a "use it or lose it" situation. How is that stupid?Stark wrote:So they were all slaughtered by stupidity for absolutely no reason. That's hardly helping the intro, is it? They didn't know? Are you psychic now? Come on, we got zero exposition, but if we go by the fluff, there's no reason they should have had no communication with the ships in orbit, and all they had to do is look up and see the drop pods inbound. If they didn't know, they're blind AND stupid.fgalkin wrote:But they didn't know that the Marines were coming. Also, they didn't know just how many Orks they were. How could they not know? They broke cloud cover twenty seconds after they launched their retarded attack-for-no-reason! They surely would have already been descending, and you don't drop that many troops without it being part of the plan. Surely, SURELY, Sergeant Stupid had just been informed that the reinforcements were nearly there (ie, about to break cloud cover). Unless 40k transports go from sitting cold on the deck to landing in the time it took the Marines to get WIPED OUT TO A MAN by a bunch of Orks.
Maybe he misheard. Instead of 'reinforcements inbound' he heard 'we can't land until you raise your stupid flag in that convienient socket'. Coded descent transponders?
Even IF they lost the dreadnought - which didn't seem to be attached to their unit anyway, as they were surprised and it wasn't visible in the longshot - how are the Orks going to breach a trenchline held by guys with machineguns? It's the 'reinforcements inbound' to 'shit, I better get everyone killed to take that meaningless hill' jump I don't understand.

Space Marines are warrior fanatics. Their thought processes are not meant to be understood by us mere mortals.Stark wrote: Even IF they lost the dreadnought - which didn't seem to be attached to their unit anyway, as they were surprised and it wasn't visible in the longshot - how are the Orks going to breach a trenchline held by guys with machineguns? Though it should be noted that rushing an objective just before reinforcements arrive, so as you can show 'em how 'ard you woz is a perfect tactic. If you're an Ork.

I'm a bit fond of Legend of Dragoon's intro, myself. One of the more underated games I've played.

So you mean they're stupid? Agreed.Vendetta wrote:Space Marines are warrior fanatics. Their thought processes are not meant to be understood by us mere mortals.
The behaviour of the Orks was very understandable: they'd probably been informed that the pods were coming down, so they needed to get out of there quick. From that perspective, the Marines had them pinned down behind a hill and they were buggered... but the Marines assaulted their hill to put a flag in a socket and were wiped out by superior numbers. I mean sure, it's RTS standard...Vendetta wrote:Though it should be noted that rushing an objective just before reinforcements arrive, so as you can show 'em how 'ard you woz is a perfect tactic. As much as I've enjoyed the emotion and style of the DoW opening, all this defense of it and Light Brigade attempts to defeat Stark's grumpiness only makes me realize just how many holes and flaws there are in its subject matter.
If they were Guardsmen it'd be one thing. Or if they instead stood and held off hundreds of Orks (since it's a fluff piece this should be the normal situation) from their position untill they where finally overwhelmed, the last Marine ceremoniously planted his flag, and died as drop pods came in, then there would be a point.
Again, Mark of Chaos has a video that is a man towering over the little boy video which is Dawn of War's.

Pointless death, suicidal tendencies from a Marine chapter with 'Blood' in the name... Sounds right to me.Utsanomiko wrote:As much as I've enjoyed the emotion and style of the DoW opening, all this defense of it and Light Brigade attempts to defeat Stark's grumpiness only makes me realize just how many holes and flaws there are in its subject matter.
