Ok. My iPod functions exactly as it should except for one key issue. It can be charged by my computer, but cannot be read. Any attempts i've made to erase the files has ended up in the updating program freezing on me, and the computer simply cannot recognize it.
Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
iPod problems, need help.

is it still under waranty? if so, go online to the Ipod website and get a appointment at the nearest mac store to have the take a look, if its not under waranty, go buy an extended waranty and go online to get an appointment at the nearest mac store.
The guys at the Mac store can fix any problem for free (as long as you're under waranty or on an extended waranty.) if they can't fix it, you get your iPod replaced for free.

Have you tried resetting the iPod? From what I know this solves a lot of random problems like these.
To reset the iPod, first toggle hold ON then OFF. Then hold Menu and Select down until the apple logo appears on the screen.
Also, do you observe this problem on multiple computers?

Not always - at least, not to the stage of mounting the drive. I've had locked-up iPods (stuck on the Apple symbol) recieve the reset signal and be good as new after a few minutes, so it's possible. Not showing up as a drive is usually due to partition problems, rather than USB connectivity problems.
