Xena is Dead, Long Live Eris! Hail Discordia!

Post by SirNitram »

The object previously known as 'Xena' has been given it's right and proper name: Eris, named for the Goddess of mischief. It's moon is named Dysnomia, Goddess of lawlessness.

Considering that Eris and Dysnomia are one of the reasons for Pluto's demotion ... YES, very appropriate names. :P

Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Thank god; the last thing this solar system needed was a planet named after some silly show like Xena.
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

You shall now all refer to Pluto as 134340.

Shit, the Emperor better get that locked down tight or I see bad things coming. >.<

More seriously I agree, Eris is a far better name than freaking Xena.

Two worls with contrasting names locked in orbit around each other - I like the idea. Kudos to the astronomers for coming up with such a clever name.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

So the satellite of the body formerly known as Xena is now named after a goddess of Lawlessness.

I wonder if that was intentional on their part.

Oh my, now THAT's a nice twist... But it was Gabrielle who ended up as Lawless, not Lucy's Xena.

they are appropriate names - I would like Pluto back as planet #9 and not #134340.

do you think the `revisionists' will be successful ?

The Discordians must be happy. And just think in 5-10 years time criminals will be attempting to claim 'rays' from Discordia made them commit crimes. (no really, a surprising number of people attempt 'Lunacy' (affected by moon-beams) as a criminal defense every full moon.

Bah. I would have liked them to stay Xena and Gabrielle just for the wackiness of it.
That being said the official names work for me.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Pluto had it coming. The only reason it was considered a planet at all was because we didn't know any better. Scientists made the same mistake for Ceres too, and they managed to correct it, even in the relatively backward days of the 19th century.
