Must have Xbox titles (and compatible with the X360)

Post by wautd »

Recently bought my first console since the NES but since new xbox 360 games are quite expensive (70€), I might as well get some budget titles from the Xbox 1. Which games do you recommend me?

If it is backwards compatible, get Def Jam: Fight For New York. The only fighting game you will EVER need.

Star Wars EPIII was a solid LucasArts game (which is saying a lot). It's not ground-breaking or anything, but the saber and force combat systems make for interesting duels. I got some solid hours of enjoyment out of it.

Star Wars Republic Commando (I haven't tested this one on 360, but it should work). Although, you might be better off getting it for PC as the online MP is weak (the Trandoshan machine gun outdoes the Republic blaster in online play, so one team always has a starting advantage).

Either of the Robotech games (if you're into that). Battlecry was a bit of a letdown, but still solid. I greatly enjoyed Invasion, but I don't think it's compatible yet.

Circus Maxiumus - haha! No, I'm kidding. Seriously, don't even play this game. I think it gave me Herpes.

Halo 2: yes, there's the whole stigma about FPS on console, but this game give hours of enjoyment due to the Co-op (I won't even play it solo). So, if you've got a buddy, it's worth the money.

X-Men: Legends 1&2: don't think they're compatible yet. The first was was so-so, but 2 made me re-think my hatred of Raven games.

I've never really had MUST HAVE console games besides the system specific ones (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc). Many Xbox games have better counter parts on PC.

As of now, I only own one 360 game: ESPN Fight Night Round 3. This says a lot because the only boxing game I enjoyed before then was Punch Out. I have plans to pick up Lego Star Wars 2 though.

My rule of thumb is usually:
RTS or FPS for PC only (Halo being the only exception, well that and Goldeneye)
Racing, sports, Action/Adventure, most RPGs, or any game where fine control isn't a huge issue and has MP is usually bought for console.

The ultimate must haves that are on the BC list are Jade Empire, which in my opinion is the best BioWare game since Baldur's Gate II, the Halo games, the two Project Zero games, and Ninja Gaiden Black.

Burnout 3 is a good contender as well, because it's simply a better game than Revenge.

Also, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II is a good diablo clone, but is pretty rare these days.

Stubbs the Zombie is supposed to be pretty good, but is one of those games I always meant to get and never managed, and XIII is very good, if a little out of the way.

Halo and Halo 2 are high on my list, especially for LAN and multiplayer. Even without others, though, the games are still quite fun, and, for me at least, highly replayable.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is also up there; its remains both the best Star Wars and the best RPG game I've ever played. KOTOR II is also quite good, even if the ending is rather disappointing. You should see if you like the first before purchasing it, though.

Jedi Knight: Outcast and Jedi Academy are pretty fun as well, even if they are a bit better suited for the PC.

KOTOR is a bit knobbly on the 360 though. Starts grinding occasionally in fights, and the sound fucks up every hour or so and you have to reboot. (though this could just be my disc, which isn't in great nick)

Besides, Jade Empire is the better game. KOTOR has some good points to reccommend it, but it's basically a game of hunt the macguffins, and the typical Bioware evil choices of petty bullying don't really "fit" the Dark Side of the Force, whereas the paths of action in Jade at least make some kind of sense. It's probably still the best Star Wars game since TIE Fighter, but that's not saying a whole lot.

How so? Revenge is the 360 version right?

I hate to tell you, but most of the X-Box Only titles that are good are also not backwards compatible.

And even those that are don't run very well. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory has problems and I hear the framerate on Ninja Gaiden Black is appalling.

Frankly, you should keep an X-Box around if you want to play X-Box games. :P

The game hiccups on a lot of the cutscenes but the gameplay itself is completely unaffected. Other than that, though, you're definitely right.

Revenge is available 360 native, which means it's a little prettier, but the core gameplay is nothing new. It's also not that much prettier, because it's just a lick of paint over the Xbox version. Project Gotham 3 blows it away graphically. Burnout 3 is just mechanically a better game than Revenge though, the car handling is better, and the cars themselves feel more distinctive, the races are more thrilling, because you can't just traffic check your way around the course, and the courses themselves are more fun to drive (especially Alpine).

Plus Revenge has the absolute worst excuse for a menu system ever. You spend half your time pressing A on a menu or result screen, even if you just want to retry for a better result you have to go through the whole laborious process.

It's still a good game, but it's not as good as Burnout 3.

Here's their list of "Best of Platinum Hits" for under $10.

I heart Soul Calibur II. Too bad it's still not playable on the 360.
