Network connection "bridging"

Post by Dahak »

Hello folks!

I have the following problem: I have my computer here, and a Laptop. Laptop has connection to the internet via WLAN, now I want to plug in my computer to the normal network plug of the laptop. The goal is to have internet on the computer through the laptop via WLAN.
I tried Windows "Network bridge", but the results so far were underwhelming. Has anyone tried this before, or a workable idea?
If not, I'd buy Yet Another WLAN card, but if it works without shelling out money...

The WLAN connection decided, for reasons of its own, to disconnect from the internet.

Follow this guide, and come back if that doesn't work.

Is there some reason you won't just install a wireless NIC in the computer? Making your computer dependent upon the laptop for Internet connectivity seems like a bad idea.

Normally, when at home, I have everything set up.
But I have my computer transported to my "working" flat where I am during the week, because I'll go to a gaming session this weekend and it wouldn't be possible due to timing to go home and fetch the computer before that.
But I would like to update Steam and other stuff here, so I'm stuck with the laptop and I don't really want to shell out the money for the wireless card just because of this one instance if it can be avoided.

Just active windows internet sharing, I've done this exact thing may times. Under the NIC's properties, under the advanced tab, check 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's connection'. Now offhand I forget which NIC you are supposed to use this on, but I'm pretty sure its the one with the internet connection; if that doesn't work try the other. DHCP on the other computer should do the rest. Freshmen year we'd occasionally do this in the lounge, only one person would plug into the wall and host an ad hoc network for others to connect to (signal in those days wasn't so good).

I tried it first, of course. But it did not yield any meaningful result. Just two computers sitting around, happily ignoring any internet connection floating around...
But couldn't try anything new today. Maybe tomorrow will bring salvation...
