There was one scene that I never forgot. It was about Threepio telling Artoo to come back and fix him and that Artoo doesn't know anything about the hyperdrive.

Then Artoo fixed it and Threepio said: "Wonderful!"

That was towards the end of TESB.

I guess Threepio's guessitmation powers aren't infallible, even when it comes to his fellow droids.

That's a very polite way of saying Threepio's an idiot.

I mean, R2D2 is an astromech droid!

3PO was just being selfish in that scene (like he often is). He was just pissed that R2 ran off to play hero before he was finished putting 3PO back together.

I'm sure that 3PO was quoting random trivia.

The veracity of the claim, even as a piece of random information, takes a serious hit, when you consider it has the same probability of being true as a statement that an astromech droid knows nothing about the repair of hyperdrive systems.

I'll quote the dialog lines for everyone's benefit:

Threepio: R2-D2 come back here at once! You haven't finished me with yet. You don't know how to fix the hyperdrive. Chewbecca can do it! I'm standing here in pieces and you're having delusions of grandeur!

[Artoo turns a knob and ship goes to hyperspace]

Threepio: You did it!

It could be possible that he knows this is an unusual asteroid field, and is therefore using the statistics of something similar to this particular one. Like a planet's rings (Geonosis anybody?). He is in effect saying "The odds of successfully navigating a Class B Debris Feild are 3720 to 1."

Yeah, as Noble Ire also stated earlier.. that's a possibility. A galactic-scale civilization would likely have a classification system for asteroid fields of various ages, compositions, density and "violence" (lack of a better term). As was also earlier suggested, the odds he stated could be a well-known figure pulled from tables used for insurance purposes or something.

Still, we know he's generous with the truth, what with telling Artoo (an astromech droid.. and an experienced, souped-up one at that) that the little guy doesn't know anything about hyperdrives.

Though it should be remebered that he did spend some time in the rebel base command center and they for sure was scanning the space around them, so it would not be so odd if C3PO picked op a little tidbit about the astoroid density and the chance of succefully navigating it with say one of the rebel transports.

So the question remains...

who is smarter, Data or Threepio? ;)

Er... Saying "You did it!" after grumbling about this and that sounds like one hell of a backflip.

I don't think 3P0 has ever screwed up simple metric units or missed a simple area calculation by an order of magnitude the way Data has. But that is a discussion for the SW vs ST forum.

We are talking about a droid which was built by a slave boy, whose purpose is largely as a translator. Why does anyone expect it to have the capability of calculating or knowledge of asteroid field survial rates? It is a protocol droid, that has shown on numerous occasions that it will make shit up to save its metal, I see no reason to take what 3P0 says in that scene seriously.

Wrong. Anakin didn't invent the 3P0 series of translator droid. He rebuilt a junked 3P0 unit.

Isn't that a bit nitpickery, Lord Poe? I don't think Mr Flibble was arguing that Anakin invented the 3PO series, only that he built Threepio (or rebuilt him, if you prefer - point being he constructed Threepio with apparently his own initiative.)

I didn't say he invented the series, I said he built threepio. as in I built my brother's PC from left overs from upgrading my computer. It doesn't matter anyway since my point was that I wouldn't expect a droid designed for translation to be able to accurately recite navigation odds in asteroid fields, anymore than I would expect a sanitation droid rebuilt by an unwashed spacebum to be able to describe the bowel movement frequencies of T-Rexes (cookie for the reference)

Well, you have to remember that when he was reactivated by Anakin, Threepio expressed a desire to never set foot on a spacecraft. He may have been ordered by Captain of the Tantive IV (whoever the fuck he was) or Luke to familiarize himself with at least general space travel trivia.

Even for a translator droid, he still had the ability to interpret the plans to a planet-killing weapon enough to tell Obi-Wan where to drop the deflector shield in ANH.

Actually, I thought it was Artoo who checked the database and maps and brought the thing up... Though I could be wrong. ANH is my least liked movie in the original movie.

Kryton. I get a cookie.
And there is way more reason for a droid that is designed to be full of useful facts and small talk in a widely spae-faring civilization to know about asteroid feilds than for a service mechanoid to know about extinct species in a civilization that very questionable knowledge of how most of its stuff works.
