I'm playing Jedi Outcast on the Xbox currently. I am on the 1st level after you get your force powers back (Nar Shaddaa) and I already find the control for force powers way too clumsy. I haven't tried customizing the controls yet; I'm not even sure if it's possible.Golan III wrote:Granted, it's on a console, but...I had a HELL of a time with Dark Forces 3 - Jedi Outcast on the Xbox...at least once the Shadowtroopers entered the fray. Fighting them or other Jedi opponents was near impossible as you could not access the force commands through the stupid fucking controller fast enough to stay alive in a choke hold, block lightning or force attacks, etc. Only by cheating was I able to finish the game. Same story in Jedi Academy.
Ridiculously hard games

Sure. Spray n' Pray with the Blaster Rifle and run very fast. You don't need to take DOWN the AT-ST's, after all. Or if you do, I think you have turrets to do so.Jedi Outcast's level before you get your Jedi powers is stupidly hard. The one where you're facing like hundreds of stormies and AT-ST's, including guys with rocket launchers and concussion rifles and you have no force powers. Has anyone ever done that without cheating?

True. Although to be fair they have done some of them so you can skip half the mission if you already completed (SA: End of the Line comes to mind). Still, some of them are mad hard. Like SA: Supply Lines. Fuck Zero, but I just had to do it to get that damn Z icon off my map.Alyeska wrote:There are some Grand Theft Auto (3 and beyond) missions which are somewhat difficult. The problem is the lack of quick saves and the very long missions latter in the game. Now you've spent 20 minutes on the mission and then due to bad luck get killed. Whoops, gotta replay.
Still, some of the original GTA missions were a real bitch. And there was no save option in that one. And you didn't even have a minimap, just that dinky little yellow arrow to navigate around countless city blacks that all manage to look the same after awhile. Sort of the same with GTA2, except there was more variety in scenery.
I loved both games, and still play them when I boot up my old PC (Rockstar's download thing never worked for me, so no XP action here) but they could be amazingly frustrating at times.

HAHA! I can't believe that NEW Turtles game has been mentioned! I must have played that game solidly for a few years as a young kid, and never completed it. It was fucking fiendish.
And yeah, GTA 1 was very hard. I seem to recall that if you failed a mission in it you could not try it again - am I right?

You aren't missing much. There are some stinking levels later on in the game as well, particularly when you have to protect buildings and other really fragile objects, which stray missiles will happilyy damage.Bounty wrote:I must've tried half a dozen times but I can't get past the first few missions in Robotech: Battlecry on the Cube.
Maybe I just don't get how you play the game. The weapons can't hit anything, the fighter design is retarded, for some reason your main guns work differently in every flight mode despite being the same fucking guns and it doesn't help that the scenery is so generic you never know if you're coming or going.

The thing about that mission was the fact you needed to call in reinforcements to win, unlike every other mission, where calling them in meant you were a halfwit, and didn't get a promotion. Mind you, I once pwned something rotten on that level; took down the TIE Avengers attacking me, both my 'wingmen', all the mines, and had the Star Destroyer on 30-something % shields before it ran awaylPeregrine wrote: And x-wing wasn't too bad. The one that pissed me off was the mission where you had to evacuate a base before Admiral Zaarin with his fecking shielded TIE fighters blows it up. So far, no problem. Until the last shuttle catches a laser bolt from an enemy bomber, and suddenly starts dogfighting enemy ships and refusing my "continue with mission" order.

The delightfully ironic thing being that the very same "Protect the Cat's Eye" missions in the proper import Macross PS2 game are actually fun since you have to be a total screwup to fail. The game itself also can be rediculously hard when you're trying to get a S rank on every mission. Particularly the seventh ARMD missions where you have to pelt a Meltrandi ship will missiles before it does the same to you all while dodging twenty or so Quedlunn Rau.Vendetta wrote: You aren't missing much. I did, exactly as desribed earlier...run like hell, spray with the BlasTech, and get into that hangar at the end, up the lift, and let the AT-STs have it with the turret guns (although they do sneak in a concussion missile here and there). Got through Nar Shaddaa too, which took a shitload of time and pissed me off many times (stupid snipers with the disruptor guns). Got all the way to the asteroid base, where you first meet the invisible shadow trooper and then...pwned. Absolutely could not match that guy without cheats. Later on in the game, you're fighting 2 or 3 of them at a time...Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:EDIT: Jedi Outcast's level before you get your Jedi powers is stupidly hard. Agreed on GTA missions. I can't beat that stupid Z one, where you're defending the RC geek from the remote control airplane bombers. Each time, one or two too many gets through.

Shadow troopers are actually fairly easy to beat. Pointblank push/pull to knock to the ground, followed by a hack-uppercut combo in the Fast stance. Instant kill. That even got me through the last levels, where it's you and maybe 2 other Jedi versus 4+ Reborn every room.

That is correct. Fail them all and you'll have to rely on felonies to finish the level, which isn't very easy, even though you get a lot more points than in the other games for it. I think they changed it in GTA: London so that you could try again if you failed, but I haven't played it in years so don't quote me on that (it's a very simple thing to do, script-wise, though).Ubiquitous wrote:And yeah, GTA 1 was very hard. Until recently I had no idea how many levels there were in the game, but there are actually twelve in total.

I can't believe I didn't think of this before, but the Gothic games are worthy of a few tossed objects. You start off each one weak as a kitten, and just about every enemy can hand you your ass right off the bat, and the world is swarming with them. It takes a long time to get strong enough to be able to hold your own, and sometimes you still get owned when they swarm you. The final boss battle in Gothic is probably the most ridiculous boss fight I've ever seen.
And The Return of the King was another hair-puller. I can't remember how many times the king of the dead laid waste to my ass.

That one is actually fun and not too bad. The same can be said for New Model Army (the third one, where you can massively "cheat" by destroying the enemies first, then let those cars through).Golan III wrote:Agreed on GTA missions. The middle mission, Supply Lines, was a fucking bitch. There were numerous times where I would run out of fuel within sight of the landing zone! I could've glided my way back in, and if I did somehow miss that I would've landed right in front of his store. Which realisticly speaking is about the same thing.
Of course, the easiest thing to do would be to let me go out there with my arsenal and l33t gangsta skillz and destroy the vans that way, but that's another matter...
Speaking of the 3D GTA games and hard missions, I defy you to do "The Exchange" in GTA3 without getting all the Hidden Packages first (or cheats). Go ahead, try it.

Actually all I'd need is whatever gets me the rocket launcher and M-4. But that still counts as getting "all" the packages to me, at least (getting 100 just gives you mega moolah).

A-fucking-men to that! I had to cheat to beat R-Type Final. I swear, level 6.0 is not beatable on any normal difficulty. Fucking penis snakes.salm wrote:The R-Type games. I never managed to complete the old R-Type on my C64.
I played R-Type Delta on the PS I and beat it after a really long time of playing, screaming, swearing and destroying gamepads.
Vortex for the SNES is also a pretty hard game. Playing it on an emulator makes it harder since all the slowdown is now gone.

A lot of Advance Wars: Dual Strike felt like a Catch-22 sometimes, since if you devoted enough forces to winning the top front, you were doomed to lose the bottom, but if you left the top front to die, you had only a limited time to exist on the bottom.
Seriously, I only beat one mission because I flew helicopters right at the HQ Building and it worked by fluke. Of course, I may just suck at Advance Wars.

Part of a good winning strategy is choosing the right COs for the job. Some maps are made easier with certain combo of COs and their skills. AW:DS has some hard maps, but it is a little easier than its GBA predecessors imho.Qwerty 42 wrote:A lot of Advance Wars: Dual Strike felt like a Catch-22 sometimes, since if you devoted enough forces to winning the top front, you were doomed to lose the bottom, but if you left the top front to die, you had only a limited time to exist on the bottom.

AWDS starts giving you CO choices pretty early on.
And having the right CO in the right place is a huge factor in victory on some maps. You should ideally on most of them prioritise the second front, and fight a holding action on the main one. Once you win the second front you have two COs against their one, which means you can do Dual Strike attacks, which can, if you set them up right, win you the map.
I don't think it's harder than the GBA ones (not Black Hole Rising, certainly), but it does have a smoother learning curve.

For GTA: SA, the worst was "The 90." To get gold, you had to nail the slide perfectly. It took me two of the most vulgar hours of my life and about 1000 tries to nail it.
Also, Battletoads was insanely hard, but what usually wound up happening was that me and my sister/dad/friend would wind up beating the shit out of each other in one of the first two levels. It was just too much fun.
