NES Music?

Post by Bob the Gunslinger »

Is there a compilation cd or a website for old NES game music? I'd love to be able to listen to Contra or Legend of Zelda or Castlevania without having to play the actual game. Also, what other NES games had the most kick-ass music?
"Gunslinger indeed. Quick draw, Bob. Quick draw." --Count Chocula

"Unquestionably, Dr. Who is MUCH lighter in tone than WH40K. But then, I could argue the entirety of WWII was much lighter in tone than WH40K." --Broomstick

"This is ridiculous. I look like the Games Workshop version of a Jedi Knight." --Harry Dresden, Changes

"Like...are we canonical?" --Aaron Dembski-Bowden to Dan Abnett

You could check out http://www.ocremix.org/ for remixed versions of a lot of that stuff. Not sure how you can get originals though.

For NES and most SNES games, the music is so old it's public material. OC Remix lets you download the chipsets on such games, but you need a special program to play them. I've never had much success with that.

I don't think they actually are in the public domain, since at its oldest, the music would only be about 22 years old.

There are plug-ins for Winamp to play NSF and other game music formats, and OCR's own Meridian plays them as well, though that might be for an older version of the programme.

Have you heard of the Minibosses? They're a video game cover band. YouTube has a copy of their Castlevania cover. You can listen to other songs on their website, which unfortunately seems to be having issues at the moment.

There's several websites out there. Unfortunately the vast majority of them are questionably legal at best, sans places like OC Remix.
