Recommend an MMORPG
So i've finally decided to break down and try an MMORPG for a couple months, just to see what they're like.
I've pretty much got it down to either World of Warcraft, or Star Wars Galaxies.
Which one is better?
Keep in mind i'll basically be playing it as a single player game, doing quests and the like. I've read too much crap about high-level gankers to want to do any pvp.

Perhaps I misrepresented my intention.
I'd be happy to do group quests, interact with players and the like, but I just don't plan on doing much PvP.

As they've said, forget about MMORPGs if all you want to do is quests. Every single MMORPG out there is just awful in that area, you'll get much better storyline and gameplay from a single player game. In all of the ones I've seen, the quests and stuff are just a means to an end, leveling up your character and providing income for the real content.
And by the way, WoW sucks beyond belief. It's one of the worst games I've ever had the misfortune of playing. It makes the Diablo series seem deep and well-written. Your only "quest" is "go to point X and kill Y of monster Z", repeated countless times until you reach level 60 and can finally raid/pvp. And from what I hear, Star Wars Galaxies isn't far behind, extremely poor management of the game has essentially destroyed it.
EVE-Online is far superior to any of them, but you'd probably hate its focus on PvP.

And I hear GW also has the added bonus of not sucking on my bank account like a vampire each month.Ace Pace wrote:Ah, guild wars should be fun for you.

Is your objection to PvP based entirely on how some games allow higher levels to kill lower levels?
You could try a game that doesn't allow that and combine PvP and solo play.

Yes. I have several friends who play more than one MMORPG, and they al have at least a dozen horror stories about getting ganked by some level 70 asshole with no life while they were still new to the game.Stormin wrote:Is your objection to PvP based entirely on how some games allow higher levels to kill lower levels?

What game is that in the video?

Well, that simply cannot happen in Guild Wars. You have to specifically enter a PvP match for other players to kill you, so you never have to worry about some max level person coming along and just ganking you.
Though we are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

That's Dark Age of Camelot, the game I currently play.
Pretty much, you get to pick from three realms and unless you go into the Battlegrounds (one for every 5 levels from 1-49) The Frontiers (Where most of the PvP takes place) or one of the PvP enabled dungeons (Nergal's breach 1-4, Balbans Breach 5-9 and Darkness falls, all levels) you are safe from being attacked by an enemy realm player.
Unlike World of Warcraft, all stats from gear and such have caps so there isn't a situation where other people will win simply because they have Sword of the Uber 90 dps. Not only that, almost all gear is tradeable (and therefore sellable) so even a person who can't get the stuff they want can usually save up and buy it. Only some of the quest gear isn't tradeable, like your epic armor or Champion weapon.

Not so in Eve online, where it's possible for new players to beat a 3 year old vets (skill levels can be countered by numbers, tactics, fitted modules, etc)Darksider wrote:Yes. You could try a game that doesn't allow that and combine PvP and solo play.
Case in point: Goonfleet who simply used their numbers of junk frigates to swarm lonely bastards
Once you reach 20 GW is pretty much only PvP though.Ace Pace wrote:Ah, guild wars should be fun for you.
Get WoW and go on a non-PvP server. That way you can only get into PvP by entering the battlegrounds, attacking a member of the opposing faction, or entering a major enemy city.Darksider wrote: Yes. Well, if you have no interest in PVP, there's always Final Fantasy XI. It has the benefit of being a game engineered from the ground up to exclude PVP, and only added it later because the players demanded it. I'm not big on MMOs myself, so I can't really offer an opinion on it relative to other games in the genre. It's very cooperative, not competitive. In fact, you will get nowhere if you try to go it alone.
As said, WoW can limit your PvP to only if you want to do it.
As fun as an SW MMORPG should be, I've heard too many stories about the "Jedi Death Squads" to want to play it (even though it's now an option [Worst. Idea. Ever.] to be one from the start, I wouldn't take it). Which is sad, because I really wanted to take part in that game. But I ain't spending money every month just to keep getting killed by some 12 year old jackasses who picked "Jedi" as a starting class.
Although for non PvP fun there's Final Fantasy XI. The only way to do there is if you take on more powerful monsters than you can handle. There is no PvP except for some special scenarios and I'm pretty sure you have to be in a certain area for it to matter, IIRC.
Although MMORPGs fail for me because of the utterly boring process of levelling up so you can actually do something interesting. Now granted I don't have any good ideas on how to go about it on my own, but doing the same repititive tasks over and over, and/or fighting random monsters over and over just to build your levels while doing nothing of real value just bores me to tears. Alas, that's the way it seems to go in these games, as you need to find yourself a decent level before you can do anything particulary interesting (regular games with levelling up generally progress you through the story as you're doing it, which isn't so bad).
Anyway, since this is a thread for it, if anyone knows of a good MMORPG where there isn't the usual spiel of mind-numbingly boring levelling until you get to a certain level for the good stuff, let me know.

Like I said earlier, in DAoC there are battlegrounds for all levels, and you can get good exp and decent cash from pure PvP. You don't steal the other persons xp or money so you don't have to worry about dying a lot and becoming a poor-ass.
If you played, you could just go along and level up normally until you found a battleground to your liking, get equipped nicely for that level and turn off your experience gain so you don't level out of it.
Re: Recommend an MMORPG
WoW is far better than SWG, SWG is shite. Utter shite. I would rather spend my time being kicked in the balls than play SWG, it's that bad. The game isn't even finished, it should still be in beta. A year after they fucked it up for a second time, and they still haven't finished it, incomplete classes, quest chains, etc, etc.Darksider wrote:So i've finally decided to break down and try an MMORPG for a couple months, just to see what they're like.

Play WoW. It's honestly the most accessable and enjoyable MMO for a newcomer. I played EVE for a month too, and I found it neat in enviromental aspects, and possibilities... but I spent that entire time on autopilot, letting my computer run packages. Not exactly exciting. Oh, I went to clear out some drones in Deadspace Pockets, but one gets damn little compensation for that.

MUD. Grab a real MUD client from zuggsoft and find a MUD on the MUDconnector. I like Toril for PvE and Duris for PvP.
Guild Wars. Bought it a while ago, haven't had a problem with it. And, once you make it passed the religious worship phase of play, you can go back every so often and work on finishing the main story. Plus, once that's done, you can go skill hunting, get armor, find a sword you like and mod that however you see it and buy runes for your armor. The items have a sliding scale of stats, so if you want a Fell Blade, there's a chance you can pick up one that's level appropriate early on and find another, stronger one later on. Stuff like that. Plus it's free and you can run quests with the bots if you get into the 'GLF Tu Monkes!!!11!11' bullshit that puts anything other then monks on the sidelines from a party. Sucks.
