I also want to know if mods would mess up any saved games. The game version I have is pre-patched to get rid of Hot Coffee.

I've heard there is a group that is porting GTA3 and Vice City into the San Andreas engine. The brilliant thing about the SA engine is it would allow all three in the same game and you could fly between them.

What are you looking for in terms of mods?
player skin mods (i.e. new cloths for CJ, change his skin color)
pedestrian skin mods (i.e. half-Life characters, Vampire Nazi's from Castle Wolfenstien)
Vehicle mods (i.e. 747's, corvettes, Need For Speed conversions)
Map mods (i.e. FedEx Depot, alcatraz)
Building mods (i.e. Zombiotech become Umbrella Corp., Transfender becomes West Coast Choopers)
Script mods (i.e. Super CJ, bombs away, Hot Coffee)
Total Conversions (i.e. Multi Theft Auto, Criminal Russia, VCSA)
The only mods that mess with savegames are Main.scm mods (script mods and TC's)

Gtagaming.com has a fine selection of vehicle, weapon, and play mods.
If you have version 2, mind (the anti-Hot Coffee version), you will not be able to mod it. It's mod-proof. You'll need to get the gta downgrader patch from, I think, multi-theft-auto's forum, and then apply it so that you can mod the game once again.
