NVIDIA Quadro FX Cards and Gaming

Post by salm »

I´ve got one of those Quadros at work and they´re really great for running 3D programs so i´m thinking of getting one for my own computer.
The question is, does anybody have experience with Quadros and gaming? Do games run smoothly with can they do all the effects and are they all in all good cards for gaming?

They're effective GeForce cards, but they cost more. Just get a GeForce 7xx0 card. It'll be cheaper or faster.

If I remember right, the Quadro cards are basically the same chip, only the drivers are designed for maximum accuracy, whereas the gaming cards will sacrifice a little accuracy for greater speed.

If you want maximum gaming performance, get gaming-oriented cards.

Actually being able to handle a hight polycount in 3D programms is more important to me than gaming. But I want it to be gaming capable as well. If it runs a bit worse it´s not big problem.

What do you mean with accuracy?

For maximal speed in games, the driver fudges many calculations and does stuff say at 16-bit instead of 32-bit percision to run faster. Image quality usually dosn't suffer.

However, Quadro cards ALWAYS run at max percision.

There are some other modifications (mostly software, might be a few in hardware) that optimize for typical professional usage.
