Interesting.. With some work I could actually preserve the wierd alternate-Toril my PC's once made..
Manic Progressive: A liberal who violently swings from anger at politicos to despondency over them.

Short version:

Modern day Spelljammers brought back to Netheril's era, massive space war, Karsus and his entire Enclave smashed, the Empire Of Netheril preserved but wounded badly, follow with 2000 years of fighting as multiple empires try to found themselves and the nonhumans are made Mankind's bitch.

When they got back and saw the mess one guy said 'Fuck, where's my Star Trek Reset Button?'.

Igot, I do believe you're correct.... I hadn't thought about all the people who'd want to be willing sycophants to the powerful....
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Well the mage will lose against all those Level 50 Tank Operators and the Level 50 commandos and the Level 50 airplane pilots and the Level 50 tv-psychics and the thousands of Level 50 telemarketers, they will gain lots of bonuses like Anti-Magic-Shell piercing attack and Anti-Prismatic Air-to-Air missile, with the improved gyms and hospitals we have a lot of them will have millions of hit points making them basically immune to Power Words and such.

Hm a Level 100 Drill Sargeant will stun him with his Power Word: "You're a little sissy!". Let's see, a Level 65 Speed Racer will probably have godly powers allowing him to outrun all of the Mage's offensive spells. Even a Level 20 weather commentarist will be predicting Anti-Everything storms and fog (with some rain) at the exact same spot the Mage is standing.

I say that high-level modern Earth will wipe the floor with a high-level D&D wizard.
