PS3 controller battery non replaceable & cable trouble

Post by Ace Pace »

It dies? shell out for new controller.
According to the report, the controller will have to be paired to the console via the USB cable before play. This pairing process will be required each time the console has been shut down and turned back on, or - given the rough translation - possibly every time the controller has lost power.

It's unlikely that putting the console into standby mode will cause a reconnection requirement, if it's console-related. It's also unlikely that many of those lucky (?) enough to get a launch PS3 are going to want to leave it on, even powered-down, 24/7.

Those wondering about battery life will be happy to note the controller is expected to get about 30 hours of playtime out of one 2.5 hour charge. As the battery isn't replaceable, when it's no longer recharging the controller needs to be replaced or sent for repairs.
And, quoting The inq

This will come of some surprise to prospective PS3 owners considering that Sony have also announced that the console will not ship with a component cable, let alone any HDMI hook-up, meaning buyers wanting to view their PS3 in full-high-def glory must fork out even more cash for the privilege.
[snip]

The PS3-branded HDMI cable will also retail at $49.99. Just for your information you can pick these up on ebay for less than 10 bucks.

At least you get a nice Blue-ray film bundled-in with your $599 PS3...which you can't actually watch at full resolution unless you spend more money on 'optional' accessories. Even Microsoft bothered to bundle a component output within the 360 premium pack. µ

As if I needed yet another reason not to buy the PS3. . .

I brought this up on another board I frequent (no worries, I kept quiet about the board name and such) and another poster brought up this.
Sony to replace PS3 controllers when/if they die
Posted Oct 20th 2006 9:15AM by Alexander Sliwinski
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3

Sony tells GameIndustry.biz that they will replace PS3 controllers "when and if" they die. As reported yesterday the PS3 controller does not have a replaceable battery pack. The controllers were designed to be play and toss at $49.99 USD when the lithium battery degraded to the point where it could no longer recharge.

A Sony spokesperson said, "The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it'll be many years before there's any degradation in terms of battery performance." And with Sony expecting the PS3 life-cycle at 10 years we're hoping they'll be efficient in their replacement procedure.

Who wants to write the story on how much money you'll save with the PS3 controller over 360 and Wii battery replacement (or battery packs) in the long run?
As a lot of other folks seem to have noticed, there's a distinct lack of any mention of the financial conditions of this replacement or how long it could take.

Whatever the case may be, it's still a damned stupid decision on Sony's part, and I fully expect them to catch some flak for it.

Wait... is there any word on what 'movies' they'll be shipping? I use the term loosely, because I don't think it'll be anything I want to watch.

What's the fucking use of a wireless controller you have to plug in to recharge if it runs out halfway through a fucking session.

That's why I use standard AA rechargeables with my 360 wireless controller. No hassle, takes ten seconds to slip them out and rack in the new ones, and you don't have to perform any kind of reset, it just remembers which controller it's assigned to be and works.

The webcomic Ctl-Alt-Del was shockingly prophetic on this issue. It had a comic showing a Sony Executive buying thousands of shares of Nintendo, then ordering the PS3 controller to be made of pineapples, so a replacement has to be bought after the first rots. :P

If I had to make a guess, probably some steaming pile of crap they have sitting around warehouses the world over, like Stealth or whatever Sony's latest sucktastic film was.

Do you read the threads before you post Nephtys?

And as for the actual news - I've only recently gotten my grubby mits on a 360, we've got three controllers (2 wireless and one wired that I had bought as a PC controller but it SUCKS for that job) and its so easy. Grab a controller, turn on the 360 and go... Its ridiculously simple.

You can even turn on the 360 with the controller, assuming you don't need to change the disc. Handy for XBLA games and perennial faves that live in the drawer for weeks at a time.

Also, It comes to my attention that we are discussing "It Just Works" as a virtue of a Microsoft product. My worldview is now broken. I must go and lie down in a darkened room until I feel strong again.

Duh, the Pod People got to Sony and are feeding them the plans that will be their own undoing. After Sony has been eliminated, they'll move on to another. And so the circle of life continues.

Yes, it takes a great amount of skill and control to read a post, forget about it two seconds later, and then drop a non-sequiteur. I am quite skilled at that. :P

Seriously though, I'm having nightmares at the idea of the tumbling controller in a PS2 Dual Shock type frame. The Dual Shocks were fragile enough, but now with one being twisted and turned left and right, with wireless bits, and whatever? Yeck!

Especially with the 'resetting controllers' nonsense... I suppose it's Analogy time. The PS3 is the Iraq of consoles: Overly ambitious, unrealistically marketed, skyrocketting costs, and trainwreck of execution.

Really? I just got one for that exact purpose and it performs very nicely. Far better than the Logitech Dual Shock imitation that I originally tried, but then the only game I really got the controller for was Melty Blood (PC fighting game),

So once Sony decides to stop manufacturing new controllers, a decade or so down the line if we're being absurdly optimistic, no-one can use their PS3 anymore?

Depends on how non-serviceable the controllers are. If Sony seals up the controllers so they can't be opened up without breaking them, then yes, they'll all be dead in 10 years. But if the controllers can be opened up, then the batteries can be replaced, and someone will make a kit for that and get filthy rich.
