John McClane vs. Martin Riggs

Post by Enola Straight »

John McClane of Die Hard vs Martin Riggs of Lethal Weapon.

No gunplay...too simple.

Let them just duke it out.

Riggs, from what I remember he's had more training in hand to hand combat than McClane has. If it's a fist fight he'll win due to superior skill.

Riggs. McClane sucks.

Riggs all the way. Good sniper, good shot, next to impossible to kill, likes to go berserk.

His fighting ablities are the movie's name sake (Leathal Weapon)...
Though we are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

If there's one thing McClane is good at though, it's taking a beating. McClane might be able to weather the storm and unleash fury of his own on Riggs. My vote goes to McClane.

I think Riggs kicks McClane's ass although the contest might get a little closer if you put Riggs from Lethal Weapon 4 vs. McClane from Die Hard III. I still think Riggs wins.

Now a better contest might be a drinking contest between Riggs from Lethal Weapon and McClane in Die Hard III. :D

I also wouldn't mind seeing a Riggs vs. The Last Boy Scout (whatever Bruce Willis' character's name was in that film).

Age and more than likely all the gunshot wounds. He was still a good fighter but as he said in the movie he "too old for this shit".

McClane already knocked off a martial artist in Die Hard 2. The martial arts advantage for Riggs is thus nill.

He did? As I recall, he kicked McClane's ass and McClane fell off, lighting the fuel, thus blowing him up.

Therefore, McClane loses.

Sure McClane got his ass kicked, but he still won in the end. Riggs might be able to beat on McClane all day, but McClane would probably be savvy (not to mention desperate) enough to find a cheap and effective way to dispatch Riggs.

Yes, but that's different from saying the martial arts advantage is nil, yes?

McClane only won due to special circumstances- the plane wing and the fuel. Straight up fight, that commando guy handed him his ass.

I just respect Riggs more. He's better in combat.

But unlike the villian Riggs is smart enough to avoid making stupid blunder like that. He's taken advantage of those a few times and is going to be on guard to prevent McClane from doing that.

I would certainly say that McClane's ability to take a beating and his resourcefulness in finding unique ways to kill people would negate Rigg's martial arts ability.

So, a fight between McClane and Riggs would probably boil down to who can stay sane long enough and remain focused. McClane doggedly hangs in there, no matter what you throw at him, and takes advantage of the slightest opportunity presented to him. Riggs on the other hand, gets this wild look in his eye and starts killing everything in sight. I would definitely say that McClane would stand a better chance of retaining control of his mental capacities, thus giving him the decisive edge needed for victory.

Presuming that McClane's neck isn't broken in the first thirty seconds. There is also something to be said for a controlled berzerk state, at least in terms of shrugging off hits.
