I hate Mangus the Red. He looks stupid, as in "has a pet giant blue ox" stupid.

Aside from the tank-cap, the Heavy Weapons teams and the Hellhound special ability, what other changes have been done to the Guard? How about the Space Marines?

I understand that you can only have one squad each of Ogryns and Kasyrkin.

Not sure where to stick this, so here it is: Community Map Pack IV has been released. Winter Assault required.

Bought this on Friday and have played this over the weekend. Its as good as Dawn of War in terms of gameplay, the single player is sort of a disdappointment. Instead of stories we have a series of missions of conquest to be played and frankly I could have done with less territories to have to conquer. 21 missions as the Tau - additional missions when I have to defend a provbiunce from attack can get boring by end game and the assaults on strongholds can get a littlre monotonous and convoluted - I mean did I have to basically take on several other faction minibases when assaulting the Eldar stronghold? Can we just make it a straight up assault against a fortress instead of mini missions within my assault - for example assaulting the IG stronghold was a doozy of a series of mini missions (take out these divisional bases, silence the guns, destroy the Titan gun, take control of the titan gun, kill the commisar.) hey, how about simply take the IG base and kill everything in your path.

The Tau were great. Never played them before, knew only a little about them from the fluff but oh boy, get a few Fire warrior squads backed up by kroot and I can pretty much have my way with anything but heavy armor. Hammerheads are awesome, not as awesome as Baneblades but you gotta love how quick they are and they cut through infantry like a hot knife through butter. Sweet.

I'm starting my new campaign as Necrons. They did not impress me in straight up fights and their stronghold was taken by the IG before I could assault it so I have no idea what that must have been like in terms of mini missions and fights. They were pretty much manhandled by the IG, made no headway against Chaos.

Big thumbs up for the Chaos stronghold map. It properly captured the creepiness of fighting against demons hordes and the like, otherwise I was not a fan of the stronghold missions.

Still, I love this game and am having a blast playing it. I guess that's more free time of mine swallowed up by 40K.

Why?! That's bullshit! The IG barely has any decent infantry and its powerhouses get neutered?!

Because they're elites (a restriction I wish they would put on dreadnoughts FFS). Just like in tabletop, you can't have a significant number of elite troops in proportion to regular troops.

The Guard's 'powerhouses' are vast number of infantry and heavy armor. Quantity is a quality all of its own.

Two Leman Russ ain't barely a vastness and Guardsmen can barely cut it against the other soldiers.

But maybe that's because I suck at strategy.

Fluffwise it makes a ton of sense, becuase the IG aren't supposed to have large numbers of tanks, they are infantry divisions, not armored. The only armor they are supposed to have IIRC are sentinals, hellhounds, and chimeras. They get things like basilisks, russes, and baneblades by getting a small armored detatchment, and that takes a lot of paperwork, man!

And its not so much "strategy" with the guard as it is "bury them under a mountain of corpses for our God".

Not really. Imperial Guard are the armoured core of the Imperium forces, and as a percentage of their total choices they probably have more heavy metal than any other army in the game.

(Seriously, in Epic there are very few things at equivalent points that can expect to win a standup shootfight with a Leman Russ, and you can deploy Russes in companies of ten).

Additionally, while normally you can't play with large numbers of tanks, you can take the 'Mechanized' doctrine that permits you to equip every infantry squad in your army with a Chimera. There's also an Armoured Company army list in the Imperial Armour books, which lets you build a army entirely of tanks/armoured vehicles. This would obviously be quite impractical, price-wise as well as game balance; it's intended only for use in mega-games, I believe.

Nevertheless, as the Imperial Armour books are GW canon for 40K, they do demonstrate that the Guard does indeed have a much more massive vehicular base than is generally seen; the Guard codex only shows a few vehicles out of the options available, and only shows a few basic army configurations which focus on the infantry rather than vehicles (Steel Legion being the exception).
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

The obvious course of action is to then bury the enemy in a mountain of Guardsmen.

Hell, in Epic you can build a legal 3000 point Guard army without taking a single guardsman.

My own only has basic grunts to throw up a wall of flesh in front of my tanks and artillery if it looks like they're going to get into an Assault. Otherwise it's big guns and thick armour.

I don't think that the Eldar will hate pies quite as much, now that their own pies are both more plentiful and vastly improved.

Probably a core of three Prisms, some Shining Spears, and Bladestorm-Serpents (a.k.a. Serpents of Fury), with an Autarch and/or Farseer.

As Space Marines the enemy I had the most problems with were the Tau.

Its like you can't even get men and material into melee range before they get cut down. In the end I was orbitally striking everything infront of me just to get my men to the Tau stronghold. Needless to say the greater good was no match for the Emperor.

The Guard decided to fight the SM in the campaign is a bit silly.

Tau are very fun. Crisis suits are brilliant. I've not tried going the other path for the Kroot superunit yet, though.

Can't you arm them with heavy bolters and rocketlaunchers and be done with it?

Or send scouts with flamers and assault marines?

I still want every aspect warrior class available for the eldar. (under new rules them scorps would be short ranged but hideous) <invisible HTH specialists with high hp/heavy infantry), swooping hawks (eldar teleporting anywhere with a trash vehicle/building aura effect every time they deepstrike) and being able to T-port back into reserves. harliquins being represented as a small troupe with a shadowseer and a deathjester.

The Knarloc is available to both paths once you get coalition center.
