any horror writers here? I've just started dabbling in the genre, and am wondering how to make a scene scary/terrifying.

I can recommend the works of H.P. Lovecraft, they are the only horror stories I have bothered to finish. Not all of them are good, though. A good place to start is http://www.hplovecraft.com/ and more can be probably found from your local library.

as it happens, I'm working on a lovecraft fanfic, which brought up my question. I want to know how he makes things scary, when some other author would make the same topic laughable.
