Firefox II

Post by Ubiquitous »

I have just upgraded and was wondering whether anyone else has found the new shortcut key to post your message quickly without having to click 'submit'? It used to be Alt + S, but that now opens the browser history tab.

You would think there would be a way to edit the Firefox shortcuts.

Type about:config in the address bar, hit Enter

Change:

ui.key.chromeAccess to 5
ui.key.contentAccess to 4

This switches the Alt and Shift+Alt functions, so Alt+S submits and Shift+Alt+S opens the history menu.

Does anyone else notice that this is much better than IE7?

There appears to be a built in spell checker now.

I wish I could use some of my extensions though.

Check for new versions manually on the site, the automatic updater seems to be a bit behind. I've found updates or equivalent versions for all but one of my extensions (Firesomething)

Already checked, several times. Unfortunately, Session Saver hasn't been updated since 2005 and the only alternative, Session Manager, hasn't been updated since last month. :(

The crash recovery function is standard now. Maybe you can kill FF using the task manager to save your tabs :?

Or just ask on the forums.

ETA: History->Recently closed tabs->Open all in tabs?

Just about any tabbed browser is much better than IE7.

Is there any compelling reason to upgrade for someone who doesn't really care about new features? I know it's free, but learning the new keyboard shortcuts and such is always a hassle.

Nothing, because I trained it to recognize "fgalkin" as the perfectly legitimate word of the English language that it is.

DPDarkPrimus, OTOH....:)

It's too damn convenient.

...yeah, missed that.

Well, there's the bugfixes, the spellchecker is really quite nice and available in tonnes of languages and all the old functions are still there. You can always upgrade and then downgrade if you don't like it.

I got the Swiftfox 2 release and it works a charm. My brother was having trouble finding a download page for FF2 though. What happened to it?

Oh yes, this spell checker is very good, particularly considering how shit I am at spelling. ;)

Might help me improve my spelling. Hope we will get a grammar checker too as well, because I defiantly need to improve on that also.

Bug fixes, including some performance-draining memory leaks. I can't really think of any reason not to update. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

If nothing else, the spell checker itself is worth it.
Ubiquitous wrote:Hope we will get a grammar checker too as well, because I defiantly need to improve on that also.
That'll probably be a while, since I haven't seen any grammar checkers in free software yet.

BTW, "defiantly"? Well, it is grammatically correct... ;) (At least, Word says so.)

The nice thing about Firefox is that you can always create an extension to make it more convoluted and difficult if you so desire.

Do I have to uninstall version 1.5.0.7. before installing 2.0? The update feature doesn't seem to find version 2.

Just download 2.0 from mozilla.org and run the install program. No uninstall is necessary.
