Space Empires V PBEM game

I agree with IB.
How many players are there? Are people too busy to run 24 hour turns for say, 7 days? And the turns churn every night at 9:00 PM PST?
The only problem I can think of is e-mail lag and that shouldn't be a serious problem.
The more I look at stock the more I'm thinking it'll be the clone, like in SE:IV. There might not be the max/min bullcrap in race creation, but going meson blasters is way too obvious. The beginning is way too obvious too... go emergency build for 10 turns so by turn 10 you have 30 colony ships. At the least they should have made it impossible to get 1 turn colony ships, instead 2 turn colony ships with emergency build and the racial trait and 3 turns normally.

Emergency build isn't quite so important as in SE4. 2 turns doesn't really mean 2 turns, it means 4 colony ships in 5 turns. And with no base space yards, your only real shipyards are on slow build for 10 turns.

Maybe. The beginning of the game's important though, and you can always colonize a shit planet nearby for a space yard.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:Emergency build isn't quite so important as in SE4. 2 turns doesn't really mean 2 turns, it means 4 colony ships in 5 turns. We'll see .
What do you mean 4 colony ships in five turns? With emergency build in five turns I can get 15 with 3 homeworlds.

Okay, back in business. Hopefully this is the last game file we'll need to download. Turn will be run no later than 10 PM PDT on Saturday.

Doesn't look like there will be another restart, so go ahead and send turns. Executes tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 PM PDT.

I just had a thought. Wouldn't it blow donkey balls if Aaron released a patch a month or two from now or even a year from now that breaks saved games like 1.08 did and we can't play. And me and IB would be out since we're playing with the Steam version and it automatically updates.
What a load of crock. All the more reason IMO that we should schedule a weekend day for an entire day of SE:V and try and get everybody into a chat room of some sort and play with a ten minute turn timer.

Can't you set Steam to not update something? I think that's an option.

Hm you're right it is.
But I see no way of fixing it if you forget to set it to "do not automatically update" and it updates for you since the manual patches don't work.
So everybody who's using steam set to "do not automatically update..." even better do "backup local content" in case your game's destroyed since I see no way to revert to older patches.

Looks like we need another reboot. Trogdor's empire, the Ventran Alliance, doesn't have a password set.
Nice place you have here Trogs .
Damn game just bugged and I got to see the entire map too!
When you start the game out, if you click on a person's empire and it says "Your turn awaits" instead of "Please enter your password" there's no password...
Can anybody duplicate this bug. Load the saved game file sdn1.gam then without quitting the game or exiting load the same game. The game hangs, but on the bottom left you can see the entire galaxy map and the names of all the systems, with the occupied systems by any player with a circle and the unoccupied systems with a star. You don't get to see anything in the main window, but you get a clear idea where people are.

Yes, I have no password. I forgot it when I remade my empire to send into Tux. I had hoped nobody would notice because nobody would bother trying to open someone else's turn, but apparently I was wrong.
I can trust you guys not to peak if you don't want to restart again.

If you're cool with it, then so am I. Full speed ahead! Execution time remains unchanged.

Didn't have to try just have to click the little radio boxes up and down and see who forgot a password (it says "your turn awaits" instead of "enter password"). It's not like I tried blanks for everybody .Trogdor wrote:Yes, I have no password. I forgot it when I remade my empire to send into Tux. I put enough to get a few levels of sensors right off the bat to speed up exploration.

10 PM PDT is actually 9 hours from the time of this post, but yes it is due today. The only .plr file I don't have yet is from Player 2, the Antagonist Empire.

Life is good take your time people I shouldn't nag before the turn due date 48 hours means 48 hours. Carry on nothing to see here.
Nobody had any comments about my "tips" earlier? Well maybe they're wrong who knows. We'll see what happens .

Turned 1 executed, get turn 2 here. Will be run Monday around 10 PM PST (be mindful that there's a time change with the end of DST) or when all turns are in.

What the fuck I ordered my planets to build colony ships!
Oh well I'm now one turn behind all you guys, if I lose I'm going to say it was all luck and bugs
I just confirmed it... I saved the last turn before I ended the turn and when I load back it says I'm building a colony ship but in the latest turn I don't have anything. So it looks like you cannot do part of your turn, save it, and do part of your turn later, because if you do the game clears your queues when it processes. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.
EDIT : It's also possible I did something stupid. Not likely but maybe, it would've had to be me doing my turn, redoing it and saving it and not ending it. Who knows, who cares the game goes on as long as it doesn't happen next turn.

That's nothing compared to the fighter bug. Apparently every time you launch fighters in combat it sucks supplies. One fighter with nine hundred, a hundred with ninety thousand.
Ordinance too is fatal. Research ordinance based weapons at your own risk, as if your ships are fleeted the stowaways gobble some up every turn.
I wonder if we can hotpatch supply depots to drop a million supplies, and all ordinance using weapons to use supply. And fighter engines to take 0 supply. Ah well forget it, if we wanted balance we could've used balance mod .

Be happy, you'll wish for shorter turns soon enough. For our first Star Trek game my pm box was filled every couple days scheming, and in the last B5 turn I had to play three hours and make over five thousand clicks.
I like it like this, three worlds, manageable. Now if only my worlds had shit out colony ships like I told them to, I'd be completely happy. Oh and if you need to allocate research faster use shift-click to go up by tens. I go up to 0.1 turns then lower by single percents until it's 0.2 then raise it one up to 0.1 for squeaky clean efficiency. But that's not really necessary, you can dump them all into one if you want and raise multiple levels, which is the best part IMO.
Also because of the map bug I know the following and I will share it with you all. All of you, nearly every single one of you, are one or two systems away from another player's homeworlds, so militarize early. It will be fucking brutal. I on the other hand started all the way in the east at least three systems from everybody.
Also the map bug happened again when I loaded sdn1.gam twice, and I see Tuxedo's map. Tuxedo is happening to start in the bottom left corner and is building "Dirty Rotten Rock Colony Ship 1", five of them over five years instead of one at a time. The last time the bug happened it didn't show any of the map at all so I came upon it by accident and I thought it was safe to try the bug again just to confirm everybody started out next to each other, but when I try and duplicate the bug with this turn instead I do get vision and open Tuxedo's turn even though it's passworded. What a joke.
EDIT : Sorry for the whining, I knew what I was getting into when I signed up. Carry on . And I won't try the map bug again.
