Mac vs. PC

Post by Uraniun235 »

Which is better?

Let me start by mentioning that their next-to-highest-end model is currently selling for $3300 USD.

Cost?
PC

Software Selection?
PC

OS Choice?
PC

Flexbility?
PC

I can build a 700$ PC nowadays that will kick the pants off of the $3000 G4 in nearly everything(MPEG tests still go to the G4)

PC's greatest strength is its flexbility though Apple is FINALY coming somewhat close to narrowing the gap between the two

Certian things go better for Apple but not alot(Image designers being the most common example)

PC. Mr Bean is right on the money as to why, especially when it comes to a gaming machine.

You don't pick up girls with a tow truck, but you don't haul a busted car to the shop with a Ferrari, either. Each have their own specific uses. Gaming kiddies like Windows PC's because they're just plain better for gaming. Graphics professionals like Macs because they've got industry standard color correction and a proven track record. Office's like PC's because they're practically a dime a dozen these days. Video editors like Macs because they get the whole package from one company with a guarantee that the hardware and software will work together.

It all comes down to personal preference. I like Macs better because Apple has a good attention to detail, and I'm the type of person who obsesses over the small things. Also, Mac OS X is a Unix derivative, so I've got tons of different, open-source, command line applications at my disposal, as well as people who write GUI shells for them. The shareware community on the Mac side has always written fantastic pieces of software.

Err, will you all hate me if I tell you that I want to get an iBook for myself when I can afford it?

Go for it. Apple's desktop machines, quite frankly, are overpriced, second-rate crap with poor price/performance ratios. The portables, on the other hand, have long battery life, are beautifully designed, have gorgeous displays and everything you need built in (ethernet, modem, FireWire, USB). Considering that you can pick up a new iBook for $999, it's a damn good deal, and Apple's portables are the only machines that I'd consider buying at this point. The desktops are rip-offs.

PC. Macs are not as user friendly as PCs, you don't really notice that task bar until you've spent five years with nothing but a mac. Also my Mom's iMac used to run at the same speed of my old PC, but it had a 56.6k modem and my PC had a 28.8k.

PCs are better except for a few specific applications like image editing and page layout.

It depends on if the application was written with a lot of x86-specific optimizations, but there are plenty of Linux applications that run under Mac OS X with a recompile. MPlayer, for example. The command line application has been ported, and someone has written a fabulous GUI shell for it. Hell, I could run KDE if I wanted to.

I wouldn't mind an Apple laptop just for the supposed battery life. My cruddy old PC laptop only gets about 90 minutes before it's running on fumes.

Anyway for a desktop I prefer PCs. Wider hardware choice when it comes to upgrade time.
